Summary of Position

As a professional within the Campus Recreation Department, this position is responsible for leadership of the Outdoor Adventure program. The Coordinator is expected to utilize a student development approach when coaching student participants and staff. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that risk management policies and protocols are followed. This professional is expected to address disciplinary situations following Campus Recreation and University of New Hampshire protocols.

Other minimum qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation, Outdoor Education, Experiential Education or related field and two years experience in a supervisory programmatic position in outdoor/adventure recreation (Grad. Assistant experience acceptable).
  2. Thorough knowledge of outdoor recreation and their organization and administration.
  3. Knowledge of the area of equipment and facility management and maintenance.
  4. Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. CPR/First Aid and AED, Wilderness medicine certifications (i.e. WFR, WEMT) within 6 months of hire.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Outdoor Education, Outdoor Recreation or a related field desirable.
  2. Two or more years of experience in a supervisory programmatic position in an outdoor pre-orientation program, wilderness outings program, and leadership development in a college or university setting preferred.
  3. Strong background in paddle sports, backpacking, camping, hiking, and orienteering. Willingness to work nights, weekends, and extended periods. Experience in new program implementation and supervision.
  4. Demonstrated communication skills.
  5. Current driver’s license, ability to obtain Defensive Driving Certification.
  6. Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
  7. Professional certifications in climbing, paddle sports, challenge course supervision/management; membership in AORE and NIRSA desired.

Duty/Responsibility

Provide leadership for the Outdoor Adventures program, to include:
  • Coordinate design of trip programs.
  • Ensure compliance and facilitate employee risk management training.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff for outdoor programs.
  • Support outdoor recreational student organizations.

Duty/Responsibility

Provide leadership for Mendums Pond Recreation Area, to include:
  • Coordinate maintenance and capital projects for the facilities.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff for the facilities.
  • Inventory and maintain equipment, recommend/purchase equipment.
  • Collaborate with other departments on facility use and rentals.
  • Develop policies and procedures and ensure compliance with university, state, and municipal regulations.

Duty/Responsibility

Provide leadership for bouldering wall and outdoor gear rental service, to include:
  • Oversee inventory, maintenance, and replacement of equipment.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff for rental service.
  • Organize and collaborate on bouldering competitions with instructional and youth programs.

Duty/Responsibility

Additional administrative duties include:
  • Maximize the use of resources including funding, personnel, facilities, and time.
  • Collaborate with marketing staff on marketing efforts.
  • Serve on Campus Recreation and university committees.
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development of short and long-range plans.
  • Follow university protocol during the hiring, documentation, and purchasing process.
  • Gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports, and recommendations.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to remain at the forefront of the field.
  • Other duties as assigned.
