Applications are invited for the appointment of a post-doctoral research associate in the area of global Chinese studies at the University of Virginia in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the East Asia Center (EAC), and Miller Center. Appropriate research and mentoring support will be provided, including faculty mentoring from the home department of the research associate’s own discipline. In addition to the home department, the post-doctoral research associate will be associated with the East Asia Center and will be eligible to apply for grants from these units.

Responsibilities would include:

• Teach two classes per year focused on global China in an area of their own specialization.

• Plan programmatically appropriate research colloquia related to the research associate’s area of expertise.

• Conduct independent research and publish in the research associate’s area of specialty

• Represent the program vis-à-vis other research programs and functional support offices within UVA and vis-à-vis external stakeholders.

• Support the program’s research assistant program and assist its visiting fellows.

• Other administrative tasks as needed.

Minimum Requirements
Education: Doctoral degree

Preferred Qualifications

• Education- Applicants in all fields will be considered, with the following areas particularly encouraged: Global studies, history, media studies, politics, science and technology studies, sociology, or others. Regardless of discipline, applicants should be strongly oriented to interdisciplinary work.

• Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research, experience in and evidence of achievement in field(s) relevant to global China

• Working knowledge of Chinese language in addition to English

• Publications in the field of Chinese Studies

• Research promotion/conference planning experience

Salary: $50,000 per year, with full benefits.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
