Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Incumbent serves as a member of the Building & Landscape Maintenance’s leadership team, responsible for a group of approximately 80 employees and associated contractors which represents two groups: Landscape Maintenance & Arboretum/Horticultural Services. Responsible for the strategic planning and resource allocation activities that affect the groups as they relate to internal and external competition and customer satisfaction. Advises and coordinates with management staff on employee evaluations and development, operational and organizational planning, and staffing and resource issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree required in horticulture, life/biological sciences, or related business discipline.

Experience:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in program planning, budgeting and knowledge of landscape services with a concentration in facilities operations staffing and management.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience in landscape services also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of business operations to include planning, budgeting, computer skills and personnel management techniques. Incumbent must have the ability to manage others and maintain an organization which is competitive in the industry and has a strong customer service orientation. Knowledge of landscape management and plant materials, pest control, and pools/fountains operations, paving standards, management, including personnel staffing requirements and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of technical specifications, use, and purchasing of equipment, chemicals, supplies, and materials as it relates to the above-mentioned units.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources functions such as personnel policies, employment selection, and organizational planning.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with and direct a diverse work force.
  • Ability to work with and maintain effective relationships with others.

Additional Certifications:

Incumbent will be required to travel to meetings and work sites. If driving a State vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than 6 points.

Additional Information:

  • Incumbent is required to submit a State of Maryland Financial Disclosure form on an annual basis.

  • The hiring range for this position is $152,160 – $179,500.

  • Work is performed in an office environment, although incumbent will visit campus work sites requiring the ability to walk across campus, drive to off-site locations, etc.
