Job Description


Responsibilities:


Under the direction of the Director of Child Development Center/Lab School and in collaboration with the Center Director, teachers, parents, and child development faculty, perform a variety of duties involved in providing a safe and stimulating environment to support the optimal growth and development of each child; assume responsibility for parent participation, communication, and education; and supervise, schedule and train assigned staff and student workers.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  1. Collaborate with the Center Director, teachers, parents, and child development faculty to promote and support enriching experiences for children, families, and the community; collaborate with staff in planning programs for the Child Development Centers.
  2. Provide an educational program and classroom environment that reflects the curricular and guidance practices taught by the Child Development Department of Southwestern College; develop, plan, and implement appropriate daily experiences for students; provide opportunities for the development of fine and gross motor skills, language and expression, creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and social and emotional skills.
  3. Participate in the coordination, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of assigned staff and student workers.
  4. Coordinate and implement requirements to meet National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation with staff, families and community.
  5. Assess the development of practicum students and student workers; and provide support for staff to conduct Parent-Teacher conferences each semester or as needed.
  6. Participate in professional growth and development opportunities.
  7. Attend and participate in in-services, parent meetings, and school functions relative the position.
  8. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Desired age group work experience: birth to 5 years of age, depending on the center’s needs. (Head teacher must be flexible to work with the younger children as the center needs a toddler teacher).
  • Desired Courses: CDC 173 Development of Infant Toddler and CD 288 Mentorship/Adult Supervision.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment, a Child Development Master Teacher Permit as per https://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/child-development-permits-(cl-797)

Licenses and Other Requirements:


  • Incumbents must meet the requirements for a Head (Master) Teacher as prescribed by the State and fingerprint requirements as prescribed by the Department of Social Services.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a pre-employment physical examination if selected for position.

All District employees must participate in the COVID-19 Vaccination Program, which requires them to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they receive an approved medical or religious exemption.

Working Conditions:


ENVIRONMENT: Children’s Center and outdoor environment; constant interruptions; contact with children and parents.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; seeing to read and prepare a variety of materials; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; lifting moderately heavy children; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office and instructional equipment.

HAZARDS: Contact with blood and other body fluids.

Salary:


Range 24, Steps 1-7, $5,202.92-$6,582.72. Initial placement for external applicants is Step 1. An excellent benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental, retirement, vacation, generous sick leave package, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.

Work Schedule:


Monday-Friday: 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (approximately). Work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the department; additional evening hours may be required.

Successful candidate may be assigned to any of the campus sites (Chula Vista, National City, Otay Mesa, and/or San Ysidro).

As soon as the successful candidate is identified and following the subsequent governing board approval.

Selection Procedure:
