Montgomery College, Germantown, has an immediate need for a Full-time Child Care Teacher Assistant. Department of Education and Social Sciences. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. This is a Bargaining, non-exempt, grade 15 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, assist with implementing developmentally appropriate activities for children enrolled in the classroom at the child care center. Assist with supporting student families.

The work leads and implements the lessons and guides children through various learning activities. Interact with children, to give direction and reinforce teaching concepts.  Receive instructions from management and provide input on student performance to provide feedback.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Implement daily lesson plans and coordinate activities with other childcare center staff members to achieve Child Care Services’ mission.
  • Maintain the classroom and outside play area; arrange classrooms to provide a safe and attractive developmentally appropriate environment with interest centers established for dramatic play, manipulative/table activities, library/literacy corner, science discovery center, mathematics center, art, music/movement area, and a group space to allow children to see and participate easily in learning experiences.
  • Design and construct bulletin boards appropriate to center themes and philosophy, utilizing existing and commercially produced education materials to further enhance classroom attractiveness.  
  • Establish and maintain parent and staff bulletin boards; monitor inventory of paper, art supplies, and materials necessary for program implementation; requests supplies as necessary.
  • Track daily attendance, and assist staff with maintaining current class enrollment, staff schedules, and other paperwork.
  • Observe and evaluate educational performance of children, provide written observations/notes for file, and notify higher-level childcare staff of issues and concerns with child participation or behavior. Initiate (as instructed) and attend parent conferences and respond to parent requests for information about childcare issues.
  • Participate in home visits, bi-annual parent-teacher conferences, and Head Start team meetings.


Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate curriculum and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of licensing regulations and accreditation standards and of first aid practices.
  • Skill in oral and written communication and working with children and adults.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with children in an effective and appropriate manner.

Required Qualification:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Six semester hours or 90 hours of equivalent approved pre-employment training, or Child Development Associate certificate (CDA).
  • Nine hours of approved pre-service training in communicating with staff and families.
  • One year of experience in a licensed program working with children ages 2-5.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Salary Range: $18.55 to $23.19 (hourly). Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
