Primary Purpose:

Acts as a design expert whereby the employee may be recognized as the technical authority for distribution design within the Company. Assists designers to prepare detailed technical designs up to those that are most complex for additions and modifications to company gas and electric facilities from onset through completion of project. Ensures design team prepares the most complex construction orders with safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs that conform to company standards, safety orders, and governmental regulations. Serves as a liaison between departments to streamline process and procedures. Mentors and coaches other designers, planners and project managers on matters related to design.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently manages numerous, concurrent projects, assignments and activities related to the distribution design. Interprets company policies; mediates and resolves disputes about designs. Works closely with our policy and standards departments to ensure published standards are accurate and up-to-date. Attend inter-department meetings with the goal to streamline process and procedures between departments. Act as a design expert whereby the employee may be recognized as the technical authority for distribution design within the Company. Review and approve design documents and studies. Provide leadership, technical advice and guidance to all level of employees/customers internal or external to the company. Attend project scoping meetings with Designers to ensure schedule durations and commitments. Keep abreast of latest developments, research procedures, and technologies in the respective field. Conduct field investigations to verify accuracy of data and identify conflicts. Meet with customers to ensure thorough understanding of their design, schedule, and cost considerations.
  • Mentors or provides training and coaching to all levels of distribution design team. Conducts meetings or presentations at department, team or project meetings.
  • In a lead capacity, completes special assignments related to ongoing process improvements, training or special projects. May occasionally perform storm damage assessment. May support Supervisor on projects as assigned.
  • Reviews work orders for inaccuracies prior to submittal for approvals to make sure design is safe, reliable, cost effective and conforms to company standards, safety orders, and governmental regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Required Qualifications: Please Note This Work Is in Electric Distributed Design, Not Gas:

  • Bachelor's Degree Business Administration, Management, Engineering, related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • 8 years - Progressive experience in Designer roles with responsibilities, activities and tasks/duties that in all material aspects require substantially the same levels of functional knowledge or skills to perform.
  • 3 years - Senior level Designer, project management or lead experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with the interpretation and application of engineering principals, Overhead, Underground and Gas Standards, Design Manuals, Service Planning Manuals, Service Guides and CPUC Rules.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Geographical Information Systems.
  • Proficiency in O-Calc Pro, ICUE, DPM, SAP, DPSS, CISCO, word processing, spreadsheets and Outlook.
  • Requires a valid State of California Driver License. Required to operate company or personal vehicles to attend business meetings, field investigations or support C&O Centers with storm restoration related activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework and/or study in an area of design, planning and/or project management.
  • Proficiency in Procore, PLS-CADD, AUD.
  • Project or construction management certification or equivalent.

Other Qualifications:

  • Work assignments will be Northeast C&O (Escondido) and Century Park (San Diego). Candidate must be able and willing to work at any of the above work locations or various C&O Districts within the SDG&E service territory.
