Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Advising Manager is part of the leadership team that is directly responsible for supervising professional Academic Advisors who may directly supervise student workers, be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks, and advise a caseload of students.

Specific duties include:
  • Supervision of 3 – 4 full-time Academic Advisors and student workers.
  • Advise a caseload of 250-300 undergraduate Computer Science students.
  • Serve in a management role of departmental exception to policy requests.
  • Hold a management role in at least one administrative task with high impact to team.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies with day-to-day operations of the office.
  • Lead by example and serve as a role model for team members embodying our core values.
  • Promote the professional development and pursuit of career goals for Academic Advisors.
  • Attend leadership and college level meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution is required.

Experience:
  • Must be a current or former professional employee at University of Maryland, College Park.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time advising experience at the professional level.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time experience in higher education at the professional level.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience of staff (professional or student).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
  • Strong customer service, maturity, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented and a problem solver.
  • Possess enthusiasm and a positive approach to work, establish and maintain excellent rapport with students and staff, and a commitment to their overall development.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office/Google Suite, professional presentation software and/or
    database usage is needed.
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree in higher education or related field.
  • 3 – 5 years of full-time advising experience in higher education.
  • 1 – 3 years of supervisory experience managing a professional staff of 3+ employees.
  • Knowledge of UMD degree requirements and advising technology platforms (i.e. Salesforce, SIS, UAchieve).
  • Experience in advising in computer science or related fields.

Physical Demands

  • Able to work some evenings and weekends if needed.
  • Sedentary work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
