- Master’s degree, preferably in sustainability (or related field), student affairs, or education, and 8 years of direct experience in designing, planning, organizing, and evaluating educational programs.
- A strong demonstrated passion for sustainability and a successful track record working within the field.
- A successful background in leading, advising, and supporting undergraduate students. Strong knowledge of student life and affairs.
- Experience with and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- High energy, entrepreneurial spirit; demonstrated comfort managing multiple priorities within a complex and fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans, including ongoing assessment and evaluation of activities.
- Strong administrative ability, including budget development, management, and financial reporting.
- Experience effectively both managing up and supervising staff, including student staff, including setting goals and priorities, coaching and mentoring.
- Strong collaborative orientation, including the willingness and ability to work in cross-functional, non-hierarchal teams and oversee and contribute to collaborative projects.
- Excellent human relations and communications skills, especially the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders (i.e, junior staff, undergraduate and graduate students, UNH staff, faculty and administrators, community partners) and develop and maintain professional relationships with other UNH staff and/or external program partners.

Today UNH enjoys national (and international) leadership in higher education in the field of sustainability, a result over two decades of work by many faculty, staff and students. Provide leadership and direction for Sustainability Institute programs including evaluating and assessing the impacts of existing projects and proposing improvement and initiating and designing new elements/new programs and approaches to achieve goals. This includes developing strategies and initiatives to build and support many of the Sustainability Institute’s student-focused programs. These programs currently include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Semester in the City: Since 2016, the University of New Hampshire has affiliated with the College for Social Innovation (a Boston non-profit) to bring undergraduates the opportunity to earn 16 UNH credits while spending a semester in Boston in a rigorous 30+ hour per week internship with a leading social change organization.
- Semester for Impact: A new program launched in Spring 2024, is an extension of Semester in the City where undergraduates conduct their internship within New Hampshire.
- International Changemaker Grant: A partnership between the Changemaker Collaborative at the UNH Sustainability Institute and UNH Global, the International Changemaker Grant enables UNH students to bring their knowledge and enthusiasm to help form and strengthen partnerships and international solidarity to address sustainability challenges in the global south.
- B Impact Clinic: A 5-year-old program that trains students in the B impact Assessment, the underlying basis for B Corp certification, a rigorous third-party certification available for companies’ who meet high standards of social and environmental performance. Students are matched with companies and help them with B Corp certification, recertification. Offered for credit through a partnership with the UNH business school.
- Changemaker Fellows: A cohort-based program for incoming first year students intentionally designed to drive recruitment and retention, and helping students find a network of like-minded colleagues, design their four-year college experience to align with passion for sustainability, and help them take full advantage of opportunities at UNH for high impact learning.
- Sustainablity Innovation Challenge: Launched in 2013, the annual competition) invites students from any University System of New Hampshire school to identify a sustainability problem at the state, national or global level, and develop creative, sustainable solutions.
Duty/Responsibility
- work with Sustainability Institute colleagues to identify and build upon synergies across programs to improve overall effectiveness and success;
- enhance and/or develop, maintain, and manage partnerships with UNH offices, departments, programs, centers, and other key UNH stakeholder groups;
- enhance and/or develop, maintain, and manage external relationships by initiating personal contact and traveling to meet with representatives of mission-driven businesses, non-profits, and government agencies; and
- serve as Sustainability Institute representative at public and networking events.
Duty/Responsibility
Helping students interested in embedding sustainability into their educational and career journey is a key priority for the Sustainability Institute. Although student advising and coaching is spread among UNHSI team members, the Program Director will spend a portion of time directly advising students, as well as presenting in classes or attending university-wide (and external) information sessions/conferences, etc. to represent UNHSI and advance strategic program goals.
