The Division of Academic & Student Affairs (DASA) is where students discover connections and community. In Student Leadership and Engagement, we facilitate purposeful involvement and leadership development that supports and enhances students’ academic experience. We engage students in meaningful and memorable involvement experiences that create a sense of belonging, and we equip them with the knowledge, tools, and experiences to practice socially responsible leadership and contribute to a global society. 

The department encompasses co-curricular leadership programs and initiatives; student organization management; education, and development; student governance; large scale campus programming; global engagement via Alternative Service Break, service and civic engagement coordination; Gallup Strengths training and coaching.

Essential Job Duties

The Associate Director for Student Engagement is responsible for the following:
  • Supervise Assistant Director and Coordinator Black Students Board and University Activities Board and Coordinator for Outreach and Engagement
  • Set the strategic vision for Student Leadership and Engagement efforts around student engagement and involvement at NC State University
  • Lead and establish goals and objectives to foster student sense of belonging and community through engagement and leadership programs and initiatives.
  • Guide staff in advising the Black Students Board and University Activities Board in new- and traditional programming
  • Oversee nearly $500,000 of the UAB/BSB student-fee funded budget
  • Provide vision and oversight of the Student Engagement Center including event policies, reservations, and operations
  • Assess and manage risk effectively in developing and advising programs and services including development of event safety plans
  • Oversee, draft, and process departmental contracts
  • Regularly collaborate/cooperate with Campus Enterprises, Talley Student Center, Student Conduct, OIED Community Centers, Purchasing, Finance, Police, Information Technology, and Communications
  • Guide engagement team in developing and implementing curriculum for the programming boards and SLE student employee/ internship programs in partnership with the leadership development team.
  • Utilize current research on leadership and sense of belonging theory, models, and development to develop a comprehensive student engagement programs and curriculum
  • Represent Student Leadership and Engagement to DASA and NC State regarding leadership development and high quality student employment activities.
  • Advocate for the needs of diverse populations
  • Actively participate in and facilitate dialogue about issues of social justice, inclusion, power, privilege, and oppression in one’s work
  • Engage in appropriate fundraising and development activities to advance the work of leadership development within DASA.
  • Leadership, oversight, and coordination of departmental efforts to provide and coordinator of high quality student employment experiences

Other Responsibilities

  • Position will be required to occasionally drive students to events and workshops/training that are off campus and often out of town.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Higher Education, or related field
  • 5 Years of Experience in Higher Education or related field

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with leadership training and development
  • Staff supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated effort to promote social justice among staff and students throughout the university
  • Effective leadership skills, with the ability to coach, advise, supervise, train and mentor
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
