Prototype Engineer
Job Description
PROTOTYPE ENGINEER, Sociotechnical Systems Research Center (SSRC)/Media Lab-Center for Constructive Communication (CCC), to join a small, dynamic development team using a DevOps approach that is crucial for empowering both its immediate team and fellow researchers. The CCC, based at the MIT Media Lab and in collaboration with the nonprofit Cortico, leverages data-driven analytics to better understand current social and mass media ecosystems and designs new tools and communication networks to foster constructive dialogue, listening, and bridging across divides. Will be involved not only with developing lightweight experimental software but also building and maintaining the necessary infrastructure to support these deployments; and assume a pivotal role in enabling the deployment of prototypes at all stages of development and contributing to a culture of innovation and collaboration within the Center.

REQUIRED: master’s degree in computer science or related field; four years’ experience in a software engineering role that includes at least two in a data engineering role; experience designing and implementing backend systems and openness to engaging in front-end development as necessary; experience with Python, particularly frameworks like Flask or Django; experience with JavaScript, particularly frameworks like React and React Native; experience setting up and maintaining software systems, including deployments, monitoring, nd troubleshooting using cloud services such as AWS and Terraform. PREFERRED: interest in both cutting-edge developments in AI and how they can be used safely and responsibly; experience working with researchers, designers, software developers, and data scientists; experience working in the civic tech space; and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, uncertain environment, pivoting as research needs develop. Anticipated hiring range: $118,000 -140,000, based on experience
This position is based in the Cambridge, MA area.
