Position Summary

 

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Workforce Education Coordinator performs a variety of duties to ultimately ensure that eligible students are authorized to received financial assistance from the Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET), Worker Retraining, WorkFirst and Opportunity Grants. The position works directly with students to counsel them on how Workforce funding impacts academic and career plans, how to become eligible for funding, how to remain in good standing for future and how to navigate other college functions and services. Finally, the Coordinator collects, prepares, and reports data needed to maintain or enhance students’ eligibility for funding.

The Coordinator works with state and community partners including JBLM, Veteran/ Military organization, Employment Security, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act programs, other government agencies, community-based organizations, and employers. An essential requirement of this position is the ability to communicate well with students with limited English proficiency and an appreciation of the value of diversity in the workforce. The position will work collaboratively with staff from the Veteran Services, Transitional Studies & Wellness (TSW) Division, the faculty from various Professional/Technical programs, Master Achiever Center, Career & Advising, Financial Aid and other campus. This position reports to the Director of Workforce Education.


 

Position Responsibilities

 

Student Support:

  • Participate in outreach strategies (workshops, information sessions and individual student appointments) to attract and serve eligible students

  • Guide students through the process of becoming eligible for funding-applying for funding, submitting required documentation, and complying with guidelines

  • Counsel students on the ways that Workforce funding impacts career and academic options so students are prepared for academic advising (provided by the Career and Advising Center).

  • Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of all veterans related financial assistance.

  • Prepare students for the various processes of applying to and enrolling at the college including taking placement assessments, attending a New Student Advising session, applying for Federal Financial Aid and other steps

  • Help students remain eligible for funding by re-assessing their status each quarter and assisting with barriers

  • Listen actively, assess needs and link students to appropriate resources; develop processes to follow-up with students

  • Establish and preserve a working relationship with Veteran organizations, staff and faculty

  • Conduct training for faculty and staff on matters related to military affiliated students.

Program Coordination and Support

  • Provide direct customer service through various formats including virtual, email, phone, and in-person with excellent customer service skills focused on bringing racial equity and social justice equity lens.

  • Create and maintain efficient and effective tracking of veteran students’ recruitment, enrollment and retentions, and Military Outreach activities utilizing internal and external database.

  • Transmit information in a timely manner to internal and external partners as required

  • Support Workforce partners by attending regular meetings and functions including VIE-25, JBLM, Local Planning Area (LPA) meetings, Basic Food Employment & Training (BFET) meetings, Security Module One meetings, Rapid Response events and others.

  • Perform related duties as required

Community and Campus Outreach

  • Provide excellent customer service to students, potential students, campus partners and community partners

  • Assist in developing marketing materials

  • Attending military conferences and events that target specific military populations interested in pursuing higher education.

  • Cultivating strong relationships with military leaders and develop relationships with prospective miliary students, Education Coordinators, veterans’ organizations, and business and industry professionals.

  • Promote all Workforce Education programs to faculty and staff

  • Coordinate outreach strategies with campus and community partnerships

  • Represent the college at meetings and events as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by the Director of Workforce Education.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, organizational leadership, business, human services, social work or related field from a four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by the college

  • Two (2) years of experience serving in or working with the military

  • Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply

  • Demonstrated ability to consult with students and community partners

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and electronic databases), actively listen and asses needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and coordinate effective programs

  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically minoritized populations) and maintain an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, strategically, and effectively

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Experience with delivering presentations to diverse groups, such as students and community partners

  • High degree of problem-solving abilities in employment training

  • Demonstrated successful verbal and written communication skills with all levels of professional, technical, and administrative staff in a team effort

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree

  • Five (5) years of experience serving in or working with the military.

  • Work experience in higher education focus on military

  • Fluent in a second language

  • Knowledge of or experience working with BFET, Worker Retraining, OG and WorkFirst

  • A clear understanding and appreciation of the training and educational opportunities, services, and resources available through the community college system

  • Awareness of the complex needs of a diverse student population

  • Demonstrated insight into effective marketing techniques; ability to effectively coordinate publicity and promotional materials to educate and inform
