Summary of Position

This position is located on the UNH campus in Durham, New Hampshire, however is responsible for statewide support in the area of agriscience animal science. The 4-H agriscience field specialist is responsible for the development of the N.H. 4-H agriscience pathway with a focus on animal science, providing leadership in determining needs; establishing priorities; and developing, marketing, implementing and evaluating programs. The pathway includes the essential content-focused touchpoints throughout the 4-H programming year and academic and career development opportunities in agriscience technology and sciences.

Program development must include strategies to engage youth and families experiencing poverty, instability, disabilities, cultural differences and/or other barriers to participation. As a member of the science education area of expertise (AoE) team, the field specialist will collaborate with Extension colleagues from other AoEs (e.g., leadership development and healthy living), other Extension program teams (e.g., food and agriculture, natural resources), and with university departments (e.g., agriculture, nutrition and food systems), to develop/identify these content touchpoints and career development opportunities. As a member of the 4-H state office team, the field specialist will provide additional hands-on support of statewide programming.

Minimum acceptable qualifications
  • Master’s degree in animal science or related field and two years’ experience providing education in animal science preferred. A strong candidate with a bachelor’s degree in animal science or related field and at least three years’ experience providing education in animal science may be considered. A successful candidate with a bachelor’s degree will be required to obtain a master’s degree within 7 years of hire.
  • High degree of subject matter competence in agricultural science, youth development, animal science, and community development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with coworkers, volunteers, and youth with a variety of values and interests, race, ethnicities, income, and education levels.
  • Availability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently, locally and statewide. Mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate.
Additional preferred qualifications
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, manage multiple demands, and set priorities.
  • Experience or familiarity with Extension programs.
  • Demonstrated competency in developing and delivering educational programs.
  • Knowledge of various animal science species and ability to identify potential industry and community supports for program pathway experience development and growth.
  • Experience in conducting needs assessment and evaluation methods.

Duty/Responsibility

Educational Programming
  • Develop and support the 4-H agriscience pathway by developing and delivering curriculum in animal science for youth, Extension educators, and volunteers.
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate state, regional and national 4-H programs in agriscience.
  • Recruit local and statewide volunteers to support agriscience in local county events.
  • Create and deliver volunteer and educator training.
  • Connect 4-H agriscience programming in schools with other community-based programs.
  • Identify and apply for external grant support to enhance agriscience program delivery for formal and non-formal learning experiences.
Engagement, Outreach and Communication
  • Develop 4-H agriscience academic and career opportunities.
  • Collaborate with UNH faculty and industry partners to identify and develop experiences and opportunities that engage 4-H youth with agriscience career and study pathways at UNH, in N.H. and beyond.
  • Partner with community organizations to expand resources and opportunities for youth in agriscience.

Duty/Responsibility

Professional Development
  • Develop and implement a professional development plan in conjunction with science education AoE chairperson and the 4-H youth development and education program team leader to maintain and enhance competency in agriscience animal science topics and professional skills (e.g., instructional design, leadership, group facilitation, effective adult education).

  • Welcome and mentor new staff and engage in their success.
  • Provide input into the evaluation of coworkers.
  • Serve in Extension organizational leadership or committee roles.
