Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Vice President of Student Affairs
The Vice President of Student Affairs plays a pivotal role in achieving equitable outcomes for students in a student-ready college. As the top student affairs officer, the Vice President provides strategic vision and leadership of all student affairs programs, services, and activities (including outreach and admissions, financial aid, student records, advising, testing and assessment, veterans’ affairs, student life, services for students with disabilities; and student conduct) as well as strategic enrollment management and retention. The Vice President advances strategies and programs to increase persistence, retention, and academic success for students in workforce, credit career, and transfer pathways. This leader will enhance the student experience through collaboration with campus partners, expand efforts to maximize student success, retention, and enrollment, and manage a complex portfolio while developing and supporting their team. The Vice President will be a steadfast advocate for assisting campus stakeholders in understanding their role in student success and achieving desired and equitable student outcomes.
The Vice President will join Piedmont Virginia Community College at an exciting and pivotal time that presents significant opportunity to expand access, degree completion and student post-graduation success in collaboration with campus partners. This leader reports directly to the President. The Vice President should have a proven history as a visionary leader who has successfully turned strategy into quantifiable improved student success outcomes. Furthermore, the Vice President will have experience inspiring others and building consensus across internal and external stakeholder groups to achieve bold visions, strategic and operational leadership, and the integrity and compassion to exemplify the College’s mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a member of the College’s executive leadership team and contribute to organizational planning, evaluation, and resource allocation decisions in support of the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the college.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the effective planning, implementation, expansion, and assessment of college-wide student success programs with a focus on scaling evidence-based practices that demonstrate ability to close achievement gaps and support the overall student experience, from student enrollment to post-graduation and career success.
  • Lead and operationalize the College’s strategic workforce, credit career, and transfer pathways enrollment and retention plan to promote access and completion.
  • Develop, maintain, and assess the coordinated delivery of essential student services for students in workforce, credit career, and transfer pathways that lead to increasing levels of completion, including outreach and admissions, financial aid, student records, advising, testing and assessment, veterans’ affairs, student life, services for students with disabilities; and student conduct.
  • Lead and administer dual enrollment programs in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development. Plan and identify in consultation with college faculty, academic deans, and local high school administrators the scheduling and delivery of courses and related services that promote completion and matriculation.
  • Provide overall leadership for programs for incarcerated, reentry, and formerly incarcerated students in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development.
  • Provide overall leadership for programs and services that lead to high demand, high skill jobs and self-sufficiency, including Network2Work.
  • Champion, advance, and evaluate student success practices to support student success outcomes. Lead staff in anchoring services and support in current research and best practices.
  • Align resources and expenditures to achieve significantly improved results in student outcomes, implementing well-designed practices at scale; exhibit sound fiscal responsibility and stewardship of the resources entrusted to the College. Lead, develop, and manage division-specific budgets and assigned grants.
  • Build on a culture of collaboration, excellent communication, and shared governance. Support and maintain effective, collaborative relationships among instructional divisions, student affairs, and the College administration, faculty, staff, and students. Ensure timely and consistent communication appropriately geared toward respective stakeholders.
  • Expand and sustain partnerships and collaborations with K-12 partners, community-based organizations, service agencies, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and agencies that drive long-term mission impact.
  • Be a highly visible, involved, and student-centered leader having both an internal and external presence in support of student success and completion. Represent the College on internal and external committees in alignment with core responsibilities. Serve as the College’s primary representative to Virginia Community College System in all matters of student affairs.
  • Participate actively in the recruitment, appointment, and retention of staff. Recommend promotions and terminations to the President as appropriate. Lead with an orientation toward professional development, support, and advocacy for their team and areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a data champion and principal liaison for student affairs to institutional research in support of data cultivation, reporting, and visualization.
  • Administer the preparation of the Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct; support the development of the schedule of classes, program maps, and other publications (such as the dual enrollment handbook) as required by the President.
  • Be informed and engaged in higher education trends and the impact on student success, including the use of technology to support students from inquiry to completion. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Lead strategic division or campus wide projects as assigned by the president.



Minimum Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree from a regionally accredited university in an appropriate field.
  • At least five years of significant senior-level management experience and/or student affairs administration or some combination of education and experience demonstrating minimum qualifications.
  • Experience with strategic enrollment management and retention, preferably at the community college level.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Proven ability to lead, make decisions and work consultatively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards in student success and student development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the goals and future of community colleges.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. Knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, and students.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A doctorate from a regionally accredited university in an appropriate field.
  • At least ten years of senior-level management experience and/or student affairs administration or some combination of education and experience demonstrating minimum qualifications.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, SalesForce, Ad Astra and/or EAB Navigate. Experience providing student services in a Guided Pathways model.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique nature of the College’s service region and community.
