Assistant Athletic Trainer

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide Athletic Training Services to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician, and in accordance with state athletic training practice act.  Athletic trainer will dress and act as a professional while representing Virginia Union University.

  • Prevention, evaluation & treatment of athletic injuries and illnesses.
  • Providing counseling and education to student athletes.
  • Refer patients to VCU Health for healthcare needs.
  • Insurance documentation and follow up assistance as needed.
  • Work with teams and coaches as to the required pre-participation paperwork and review the documents.
  • Assist with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage.
  • Record keeping and documentation.
  • Work with doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes of assigned athletic teams.  This individual will be flexible with event coverage.  Initial athletic team coverage will be determined upon hire based on experience. 
  • Assist with recruitment, supervision, and education of Work Force, Work Study, Internship & Volunteer students.
  • Athletic training administrative duties as assigned by Head ATC.
  • Perform other duties not specifically stated herein but essential to the total team concept of athletic health care.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in appropriate area of specialization
  • Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • The athletic trainer must be a licensed and in good standing with Virginia Department of Health Professionals 
  • First Aid & CPR certified (Instructor certification preferred)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes of various weight/heights.
  • Must be able to push carts with athletic equipment on them.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances.
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate to give adequate directions and instructions to others.
  • Must be able to carry training kit and coolers for long distances.
