Summary, Primary Duties, Skills and Experience
Job Summary:
The Instrument Manufacturing Manager supervises and manages the development, manufacturing, testing, servicing, and support of Bionano's instruments. This role's primary goal is to enhance productivity, improve product quality, and drive efficiency for our instrument manufacturing operations. The role works closely and cross-functionally with Bionano's internal teams and contract manufacturers (CMs) to transfer and support manufacturing of Bionano's products.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage the Instrument Manufacturing team that supports Bionano instruments and processes (20%).
  • Create, revise, and review manufacturing documents, including work instructions for build, bring-up, alignment and test of the instrument (15%).
  • Transfer to and implementation of design changes at CMs, including training of the CMs on the build, bring-up, alignment and test of the instrument (15%).
  • Establish and trend KPIs for all production lines, review nonconforming material, and work with cross functional teams to determine material disposition. Perform root cause analysis, implement corrective/preventative action and drive continuous improvement. (10%)
  • Responsible for overseeing the final processing and release testing of instruments sent from CMs.
  • Establish the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of internal instruments.
  • Ensure adherence to Quality System requirements throughout product lifecycle including products in development as well as validated products and processes already in production.
  • Other duties as assigned (5%).
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Required Skills/Abilities:

Education, Certifications, Licenses
  • Education (Level and field of study) required/ preferred:
    • Minimum of a BS degree in Engineering, Biophysics, Analytical or Physical Chemistry, or a related field
  • Years relevant/ total work experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
    • Minimum of 2 years of management experience
    • Understanding of motion controls and electronics
    • Demonstrated experience with fluorescence microscopy techniques
    • Experience with building, aligning and testing of optical systems
    • Experience with manufacturing documentation and transferring of new products to contract manufacturers
    • Experience working in ISO regulated manufacturing environment

Leadership Responsibility (Direct/ Indirect): Supervise, train and support a team of technicians. Coach, train and support junior engineers.

  • Work Location: San Diego, CA 9640
  • Travel Requirements:
    • 10-20% of travel time expected
    • Travel within California to CM and/or other suppliers of Bionano
    • Travel may be several days at a time but should not exceed 1 consecutive week

    • Sit and stand for prolonged periods
    • Repeating motions that may include the hands, wrists and/or fingers
    • Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms

    • Work environment involving low/high temperatures; hazardous conditions, low ventilation, noisy environments, small/enclosed spaces
    • In-person interaction with others indoors and outdoors
    • Operating and driving motor vehicles; prolonged periods of sitting while driving
    • Use standard computer, telephone and related equipment for communication, and recordkeeping,
    • Able to travel, including international travel, without personal assistance
