Harris & Associates isseeking a Technical Editor who can help us create, edit, and organize highly technical information and turn it into compelling and useful content for internal and external audiences, ensuring work products are fully referenced and technically and grammatically correct.This position would support work products across the Environmental + Planning Consulting, Community Development + Housing Consulting, Municipal + District Finance Consulting, and Engineering Consulting business units. A successful candidate for this position is a self-starter who enjoys working collaboratively with clients, stakeholders, and project teams across multiple disciplines.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Reviews and edits information from technical team members and other contributors for clarity, coherency, consistency, correctness, completeness, organization, and format in accordance with changing regulations and standards.
  • Reviews and edits work products for grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, redundancy, composition, and editorial style.
  • Reviews technical work products to ensure that ideas are conveyed clearly by words, pictures, tables, graphs, and graphics/illustrations.
  • Ensures content is written appropriately for the targeted audience.
  • Applies working knowledge of various style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style and Harris technical editorial style, as well as in-depth knowledge of client specifications and instructions regarding documentation and work product standards.
  • Provides editorial guidance to authors and technical team members, including creating project- and/or client-specific style sheets and templates.
  • Formats work products as needed using Microsoft Word font styles and template files.
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Able to adjust editorial and formatting review level based on deadlines and budgets.
  • Attends project meetings as necessary and assists with work product milestone schedules.
  • Collaborates with other editorial team members to track updates to editorial style guides/sheets, ensure consistency of voice and content, and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborates with authors and project teams to meet project- and client-specific guidance in documents and deadlines.
  • Must have thorough understanding of professional standards and resources and demonstrate quick, solid editorial judgment with sensitivity to client demands while maintaining established editorial and documentation standards.
  • Oversees work product review and production between the project manager and technical teams to ensure work products are prepared efficiently, deadlines are met, needs for editorial assistance are identified, and conflicts between competing deadlines are addressed.
  • Assists with marketing proposals and materials.
  • Assists in the production and distribution of work products (may include hard copies).
  • Maintains a filing system of work products and files received for processing.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Bachelor's and/or equivalent 5+ years' experience technical editing client-facing documentation and other forms of technical content.
  • Experience reviewing technical impact analyses, ensuring internal work product consistency, and applying excellent editing and writing skills.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Word (specifically Track Changes, Styles, and AutoText/AutoCorrect functions) and Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent analytical, organization, and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative, flexible, team-oriented work style paired with the ability to work independently, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
Additional Preferred Experiences
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, or other closely related field.
  • Understanding of CEQA/NEPA document format and compiling text and supporting materials (figures, tables, appendices).
  • Technical writing, editing, and formatting of environmental analyses and environmental documents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word macros, PerfectIt, and Airtable is a plus.

The salary rate offered for this position is $70k-$90k.Actual pay offered will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
