The Director - Technical Accounting is primarily responsible for managing Ligand's accounting policies, procedures, and positions on a range of technical accounting topics, including the implementation and compliance with new accounting standards. In addition, this will assist with the SEC reporting and monthly close processes in compliance with SOX 404 and ensure Company's financial statements are maintained in accordance with GAAP.

Essential Role Responsibilities

• This role will work directly with the VP, Controller and have significant exposure to C level Exec. as well as the Corporate Development team
• Manages the technical accounting research guidance and whitepaper documentation including but not limited to business combinations, convertible debt, equity method investments, financial assets, contingent consideration, derivatives, revenue recognition and stock based compensation
• Assists the external reporting function of the Company's SEC reporting requirements, including review of cash flow statement, 10-Q, 10-K and annual Proxy document drafting and tie-out
• Coordinate quarterly review and year-end audits including preparation of schedules and analysis, interaction with auditors and senior members of the management team
• Assists the month-end close process and internal financial reporting including review and approval of journal entries, account reconciliations, reports and schedules - ensuring the close process is performed in an efficient and effective manner
• Review certain reconciliations and/or analysis including but not limited to financial assets, derivative assets and share-based compensation
• Assists with identifying process improvements, implementing changes, and ensuring best practices. Assist with the update of controls including assessing any control gaps and changes in processes
• Maintain financial records of the Company in a neat and orderly manner
• Mentor and guide the direction of accounting personnel and provide staff with continuous challenge and growth opportunity

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business
• CPA is required
• 10+ years of related experience with a combination of public and corporate accounting. Biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience preferred. Recent PCAOB review experience is a plus
• Experience in technical accounting research and assessments
• Ability to independently research complex accounting transactions/issues
• Strong understanding of SOX 404 compliance and internal controls. Solid knowledge of GAAP and recent accounting trends
• Possess superior organizational and documentation skills, attention to detail, strong teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external professionals at all levels

  • Salary. Range, dependent on experience: $200,000 - 235,000 yearly.
