General Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Instruction for Academic Pathways & Partnerships, the Director of the Academic Success Center provides management, coordination, and responsive innovation for students’ instructional support/tutoring including general tutoring opportunities for all students in all content areas, liaison with the Writing Center and the Math Resource Center; and training and professional development for tutors to attain recognized tutoring credentials. The Director oversees the day-to-day operations, scheduling, documentation and reporting requirements. The Director supervises the program assistant and hourly staff and works in liaison with the faculty leads for Writing and Mathematics.

Responsibilities include internal and external management and coordination of student tutoring and resource support activities including supervising/training student (peer) tutors, budget monitoring for the Academic Success Center, Writing Center, and Math Resource Center. In addition, the Director will provide data collection, analysis, and reporting; and recruiting, outreach, and marketing development/implementation. The Director collaborates with faculty and staff in meeting the academic needs of all students.

The role requires close, constructive collaboration with the Writing Center and Math Resource Center lead faculty, ASC staff and student peer tutors, other support services such as MESA and TRIO, and faculty across divisions. The Director organizes and schedules the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification recognized tutoring training for all student peer tutors and supports specific professional development in writing, math, and other content areas in conjunction with faculty leads. The Director must be prepared to work a flexible schedule including some evenings.

This is an exempt, at-will, full-time position.

Essential Tasks

Program Direction & Control 70%


  • Lead in the coordination and day-to-day integration of entities supporting student tutoring;
  • Maintain a positive and responsive environment for students, tutors, instructors and all users of the Academic Success Center;
  • Liaise regularly with Writing and Math faculty leads to assure responsive service for all students;
  • Establish and effective and equitable process for assisting students seeking academic support and working with faculty seeking tutoring assistance for students in their content areas;
  • Manage and monitor the ASC budget and monitor and provide guidance on the WC and MRC budgets in collaboration with the faculty leads;
  • Plan and implement peer tutor recruitment, screening and hiring according to college policies and in conjunction with the appropriate college entities;
  • Plan and implement professional development (CRLA and other) for peer tutors, document and record progress, and maintain records;
  • Lead in implementing evidenced based best practices related to instructional support and tutoring;
  • Supervise and maintain the ASC webpage and assure its currency, relevance, and accessibility;
  • Serve as a point of contact for questions and requests related to instructional support;
  • Collaborate with special cohort groups and programs such as MESA, Identity Learning Communities, TRiO, Achieve, and professional technical programs to assure student needs are addressed;
  • Plan and manage tutoring schedules that are flexible to meet the variety of student needs;
  • Hold regular meetings with ASC staff and faculty;
  • Report regularly to the Dean of Instruction;
  • Manage current tutor tracking technology to create data about ASC usage and improve access;
  • Manage the Public Speaking Center;
  • Collaborate with Guided Pathways/Retention groups to determine how the ASC can better support student success;
  • Improve access to tutoring through more subjects, modalities, and types of tutoring offered;
  • Supervise and mentor up to 20 tutors each quarter.
Direct Client Services 15%
  • Respond to student concerns and provide appropriate resources/intervention;
  • Design and deliver effective training and professional development for 30-40 student tutors each quarter;
  • Facilitate effective linkages with all areas connected to serving instructional support needs of students such as Counseling, CASE, Advising, the Business Office, etc.
Professional Development 5%
  • Attend statewide, regional, and/or national meetings and workshops relevant to the work of the Academic Success Center;
  • Maintain relevant skills and knowledge pertinent to training student peer tutors and providing instructional support access for all students.
Campus Community 10%
  • Participate in campus workgroups, activities, and initiatives;
  • Highlight the role and responsibilities of the ASC to the campus at large;
  • Partner with programs such as Honors and the Transfer Center to deliver college success related seminars.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree in education administration, counseling, or related field; AND
  • 3 years of experience managing and implementing instructional support/tutoring services; AND
  • 2 years experience teaching and/or tutoring post-secondary students; AND
  • Experience supervising staff.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in education administration, counseling, teaching, or a related field, from a regionally accredited institution;
  • Competent in a language(s) in addition to English;
  • Community College teaching and/or leadership experience;
  • Experience with College Reading and Learning Association training.
