Applications are now being accepted for the position of Pride Center Counselor Coordinator at San Diego Mesa College. This position is housed in Student Success and Equity and is under the direction of the Dean of Student Success and Equity. Mesa College is located in Clairemont Mesa in San Diego and is one of four colleges in the San Diego Community College District. The Counselor Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluation of the Pride Center. The Counselor Coordinator will provide academic, personal, and career counseling services, in addition to coordinating the center and services. This is a 40-hour work week (30 on-campus & 10 off-campus), Monday through Friday, 11-month assignment.

The Pride Center opened on February 22nd, 2023, after extensive advocacy from Queer students, employees, particularly the Mesa College LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) Task Force Committee-a subcommittee from the Committee for Diversity Action, Inclusion & Equity (CDAIE). The Pride Center at Mesa College welcomes and supports students and employees regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity or cultural background(s). The Pride Center offers centralized services for LGBTQIA+ and ally students such as academic, personal, and career counseling; Safe Zone trainings; expressive and affirming events and activities; Case management to on and off community resources; and other student leadership opportunities.

While the current vacancy is at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Major Responsibilities:
Work to support Mesas diverse student population by providing the following services:

  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Pride Center and services.
  • Responsible for gathering, maintaining, interpreting, and disseminating records related to the eligibility and performance of student participants and the program overall.
  • Prepare and present reports and evaluations of services.
  • Review all project expenditures to ensure they are in accordance with SDCCD and state guidelines, and that they are reasonable and in line with the objectives of the Pride Center.
  • Assist students with the development of abbreviated and comprehensive education plans with a successful transfer, career counseling, and educational goal completion.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling services in face-to-face and online formats.
  • Provide counseling services to special program students including LGBTQIA+ students, students on financial aid, international students, veterans, students with disabilities, athletes, and students in various retention programs.
  • Support students in identifying appropriate college, community resources, and other LGBTQIA+ affirming resources to resolve obstacles which interfere with their success and retention as students.
  • Conduct orientations and workshops for students.
  • Coordinate and plan program activities and services.
  • Holds regular team meetings and training.
  • Participation in campus-wide and district committees, as well as regional meetings and events.
  • Serve as a liaison to high schools, college departments, community organizations, and other universities and colleges to enhance services provided to students.
  • Maintain up-to-date information related to legislation and policies impacting the student LGBTQIA experience.
  • Research different funding opportunities and develop grant proposals.
  • Participate in engaging community relations with organizations and allies that support the foster youth.
  • Responds to difficult and sensitive public inquiries and complaints and assist with resolutions and alternative recommendations.
  • Performs related work as required.



Qualifications:
Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR

the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have achieved:

  • Experience in a role coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating a student support program.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to work with students who identify as LGBTQIA+.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide academic, career, and personal counseling to students from special populations. This includes but is not limited to the initial intake appointment, collection, and analysis of verification of program participation to determine eligibility for services, development of student educational contracts, personalized case management, individual counseling, and group presentations.
  • Interpreting and applying policies and regulations within a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and the ability to identify students experiencing academic difficulties including monitoring, evaluating progress, and increasing retention.
  • Establish and maintain collegial working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, community agencies, and educational institutions.
  • Knowledge and/or skill in the use of computer technology, applying emerging technologies, and ability to utilize technology in promoting and enhancing services to students.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience that would indicate sensitivity, understanding, and ability to work with special populations, as well as the diverse academic, socio-economic, disability, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Assist targeted students to meet their key needs, with a particular focus on financial aid, housing, and community resources.



Licenses:

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step C - Class 6, Step C ($6,934.11 - $8,849.88) per month based on the 2024 AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable.

The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
