Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Compton Community College District is now accepting applications for the part-time Counselor pool for the 2023 - 2024 academic year. Typical duties include: Counseling students in all academic, transfer, career and vocational areas; participation in the matriculation process, including assessment, orientation, development of student education plans, and identifying retention strategies to achieve desired outcome and follow-up. Assignments could be in Outreach, CTE, Veterans Resource Center, Financial Aid, First Year Experience, General Counseling and Formerly Incarcerated Students in Transition Program (FIST)/Black Male Success Program (BMS). The assignment may involve day, evening, and weekend assignments.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The duties of the part-time Guided Pathways Counselor may include, but not be limited to, the following:

 

        • Deliver comprehensive counseling support services to an assigned group of students through degree completion.

  • Conduct workshops and group counseling on topics of relevance and interest.

  • Review student progress and tracks student use of academic support services.

  • Regularly collaborate with faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success.

  • Maintain accurate notes and review grade reports for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals for opportunity programs.

  • Support annual recruitment of students.

  • Assist in organizing periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff.

  • Counsel students in the appropriate academic and vocational guided pathways; provide academic advising, counseling, and participation in the program process.

  • Develop student education plans and provide follow-up for students.

  • Participate in the development of retention strategies to assist students in completing their goal.

  • Provide career planning for undecided students.

  • Conduct workshops for students, including but not limited to, probation/dismissal-status students.

  • Provide virtual and/or group counseling.

  • Teach human development classes, as needed.

  • Provide input into the development of curriculum guide sheets and catalog materials with the college and four-year institutions.

  • Foster relationships with the District high schools.

  • Participate in division program review.

  • Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services to community college students from diverse backgrounds regarding degree and vocational education program planning, university transfer planning, education, career decision, goal clarification and personal life management.

  • Participate in the assessment of the related service area outcomes (SAOs).

  • Participate in the assessments of student learning outcomes (SLOs).

 

 

 

 

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or and career development, OR

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline; OR

  • The equivalent - Candidates not possessing the required qualifications as stated on this announcement must complete the Request For Equivalency Form as part of the application process to explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above; OR

  • Valid California Community College Instructor credential in appropriate subject issued prior to July 1, 1990; AND

  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and of individuals with disabilities.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators

  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills

  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities

  • Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed

  • Experience using a case-management model of serving students including confidential record-keeping procedures

  • Experience advising students in a post-secondary program

  • Experience using electronic student education plans, course placements, and student information systems and internet for academic and career planning

  • Experience collaborating with multiple service providers within the campus and the community.

  • Experience working with non-traditional college students who face multiple outside barriers, such as poverty, parenthood, academic disadvantage, physical and/or emotional abuse, drug abuse and/or anxiety and depression

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
HOURLY RANGE: $44.79 - $72.27 (depending upon education and experience)

Part-time faculty members are compensated on a semester basis according to the number of class hours assigned per semester and on cumulative semesters of instruction for the District.
