Job Description:

Title: Upward Bound English Instructor

Unit: MCCC Part-time Professional Staff

Department: Precollegiate TRiO Programs and Gear Up

Reports to: Director, Precollegiate TRiO/Gear Up Programs

Date: November 17, 2023 (Reopened January 2, 2024)

General Summary: The English Instructor develops and implements the program's English Language Arts Curriculum with a college literacy focus for students in grades 9-12 at Lowell High School. The position reports to the Director and Assistant Director of TRiO & Gear Up: Massachusetts Programs. This is an 11-month part-time position (15 Hours Weekly) and is contingent upon continued grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and 1:1 support on all college essays, scholarships essays and ongoing English class assignments students are assigned in the academic year
  • Instruction in and preparation for all standardized tests (MCAS, SAT, ACT, etc.) related to English and Writing
  • Individual instruction and tutoring for students not reaching proficiency on 8th and 10th grade MCAS exams or students struggling academically
  • Provide individual and group instruction for Upward Bound class during academic year in collaboration with the STEM Coordinator & Career Development Counselor
  • Assist in preparation, planning and instruction for our annual summer component (takes place during summers months of June-August) by developing and implementing an English Language Arts curriculum
  • Assist Career Development Counselor with design and implementation of resume and cover letter writing skills along with professional communication and interview techniques
  • Utilize reporting systems in place to record and track student interactions (i.e. Blumen)
  • Assist in student recruitment and development of individual academic plans
  • Participate in regular meeting and events as required
  • Assume related duties and responsibilities as necessary

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, English Literacy or closely related field
  • Minimum three (3) years of related experience working with curriculum and lesson planning or tutoring in both 1:1 and small groups.
  • Experience working with students from a diverse background and/or who identify as low-income, first-generation or have a documented disability.
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education, English Literacy or closely related field.
  • Massachusetts teaching certification.
  • Curriculum development experience.
  • Expertise in the area of literacy and workshop development.
  • Formal training related to Upward Bound objectives or experience with TRIO programs.
  • Background in advising college-bound students.
  • Multilingual skills is a plus

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $32.00 per hour

Location: Location is primarily in Lowell High School.

Hours: 15 hours per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. Days are flexible but shifts are typically between 8am-4pm
