Job Purpose
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is currently searching for a full-time faculty member to serve as an instructor of music who directs various instrumental ensembles, providing high quality, learner-centered instruction for students enrolled in music coursework at KCKCC while supporting the institution's mission, vision, and strategic plan.

Position Description

  • Teach both large and small instrumental ensembles in jazz and contemporary music settings.
  • Teach additional courses in music, possibly including applied lessons and music appreciation.
  • Recruit students to the instrumental music program.
  • Engage as a primary administrator of the Kansas City Jazz Summit, a four-day on-campus jazz festival.
  • Participate in the budget process to assess instrumental music needs.
  • Prepare course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  • Utilize student-centered teaching strategies, and provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance including current grades in course(s) taught.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  • Participate in all required assessment activities.
  • Serve on institutional committees as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Dean.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of jazz and contemporary/commercial theory and performance practice.
  • Knowledge of classical theory and performance practice.
  • Demonstrated high-level skills as a professional performer.
  • Demonstrated teaching skills in ensemble, lecture, and/or one-on-one applied lesson settings.
  • Demonstrated time management, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer skills.
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress to apply appropriate feedback.
  • Ability to work in a student-centered team environment.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse population.
  • Ability to work as part of a collective faculty team, both within the Department and the Division.

Position Qualifications and/or Education

Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Master's degree in a music field.
  • Three (3) years' experience directing jazz ensembles.
  • Three (3) years' experience teaching both classical and contemporary/commercial musical styles.
  • Three (3) years' experience performing professionally in large and small ensembles of various musical styles.

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Relevant doctorate.
  • Five plus (5+) years as an active performing jazz musician.
  • Experience directing ensembles at the collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching through evaluative measures.
  • Experience with outreach and recruiting activities.
  • Teaching experience in an open enrollment, urban community college.

Work Schedule
Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
