Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.
Organizational Objective:
P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution.

Purpose of Position:
This position is a Hybrid Credit/Non-Credit Faculty, which is a full-time, restricted, professional faculty member who is managed by the college’s Chief Workforce Officer. The supervisor for academic credit courses will be the Dean of STEM, Health and Applied Programs. The position will have credit and non-credit teaching responsibilities, as well as responsibilities for the recruitment, work-based learning opportunities, and job placement of completers from workforce and academic healthcare programs. Programs may include, but are not limited to, Nurse Aide, Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, and Medication Aide. This instructor will serve as the Nurse Aide Program Coordinator and Primary Nurse Aide Instructor for the program held in Franklin County, and may serve as alternate Primary Instructor for the Main Campus program if needed. The position will also provide student advising, participate in curriculum development, and maintain office hours in a ratio related to credit teaching load. Teaching hours may vary based on industry and student needs, including day, evening and/or some Saturday hours. This is a 12-month, grant-funded position with a one year contract that may be renewed as needed.
Education programs requiring the Virginia Board of Nursing (VA BON) approval, such as a nurse aide education program, must comply with specified VA BON regulations.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution required by start date; must hold a current Registered Nursing license or have multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia as Registered Nurse without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice; must have two years of experience as a registered nurse within the previous five years and at least one year of experience in the provision of long-term care facility services.
  • Such experience may include, but not be limited to, employment in a nurse aide education program or employment in or supervision of nursing students in a nursing facility or unit, geriatrics department, chronic care hospital, home care or other long-term care setting.
  • Experience should include varied responsibilities, such as direct client care, supervision, and education.
  • Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to teach a combination of day, evening, and weekend, hybrid, and/or online classes, skills laboratory, and conduct clinical.
  • Candidate should be familiar with utilizing computer and other technologies for instruction.

Selected applicant must pass a criminal records background check. Nursing faculty are required to maintain current American Heart Association BLS certification, receive yearly Tuberculosis screening, and provide proof of current immunizations. Nursing faculty may be required to don PPE during instructional periods in all settings and may be required to be tested for COVID19 as directed by clinical agencies. Documents verifying identity and eligibility to work in the United States must be presented upon employment. Prior to being assigned to teach the nurse aide education program, all instructional personnel shall demonstrate competence to teach adults by one of the following (18VAC90-26-30 D): 1. Satisfactory completion of a course in teaching adults that includes: a. Basic principles of adult learning; b. Teaching methods and tools for adult learners; and c. Evaluation strategies and measurement tools for assessing the learning outcomes; or 2. Have experience in teaching adults or high school students. Candidates who do not have concept-based curriculum experience must participate in available continuing education. Candidates may be required to participate in professional development for instructional technology, core content/subject matter development, and other related opportunities.
