Mentor: Dr. Latesha Elopre  opens a new website, Dr. Aadia Rana, Dr. Lynn Matthews, Division of Infectious Diseases

A postdoctoral position working with Dr. Elopre’s dry lab in the Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is available. Supervision is shared between Dr. Elopre, Aadia Rana (project- on Road to zero R01) and Lynn Matthews (project on Coastal as well). Dr. Elopre’s research is focused on improving HIV health disparities through increasing utilization of HIV-prevention strategies, like HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (i.e. PrEP), among sexual and gender minority populations. Dr. Elopre uses mixed-methods, implementation science, and epidemiologic approaches to evaluate barriers to uptake of PrEP and design behavioral interventions tailored to populations vulnerable to infection.

Candidates will be expected to work with Dr. Elopre on a project studying implementation of PrEP into routine gynecologic care as well as proposals focused on improving PrEP access with other marginalized groups. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in clinical behavioral science (specifically mixed methodology), epidemiology, implementation science, or public health with an emphasis on HIV prevention, or related field. The candidate should also have strong communication and writing skills, as the candidate will be expected to help with grant proposals and manuscripts. Based on the candidate’s interests and goals, it is expected that this work will be adopted by the candidate as the foundation of a mentored career/research development proposal (K series equivalent, early career award, etc.) towards the end of the postdoctoral period.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Project management
  • Supporting development of data collection tools (questionnaires, interview guides)
  • Qualitative data collection
  • Analysis of existing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Leading and supporting manuscript writing
  • Leading and supporting grant proposal development and writing

  • PhD

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in HIV/AIDS programs and services is highly desirable
  • Experience working with sexual, gender and minority populations


Ample opportunities for professional development, mentorship, academic and research leadership, publication, and applied knowledge translation will be provided through the interdisciplinary training environment in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and Division of Infectious Disease.  Through her NIMH, NIAID and industry-funded research, Dr. Elopre collaborates closely with community partners, UAB and other academic faculty with expertise in mixed methods, behavioral science, epidemiology, biostatistics, and behavioral psychology. This opportunity involves being part of a team of interdisciplinary faculty, trainees and staff collaborating through the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). Additional professional development opportunities are available through the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.
