Job Description



  • This is a 10-month faculty position in Biology.
  • The primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory biology (for majors and non-majors) with the potential for upper level biology courses (microbiology and/or anatomy & physiology). Faculty in this position may be required to teach courses in other science disciplines (such as biotechnology, nutrition, chemistry, etc.) as needed to support the mission and needs of the division.
  • This position will be located in the Mathematics and Science Division and will fulfill all responsibilities and expectations of a regular HCC faculty member. These include but are not limited to outcomes assessment, curriculum development, overseeing adjunct faculty and college service.


  • The Faculty, Biology reports directly to and is responsible to the Director of the Mathematics and Science Division.
  • The Biology faculty will work with the Division Director to provide leadership for faculty teaching biology or related lectures and laboratory sections as needed; assist support staff with laboratory set-up/equipment maintenance and orders as needed; and work with staff in the Learning Support center to provide instructional support and supplemental materials for students.
  • The Biology Faculty will coordinate most closely with the science faculty, and the Laboratory Coordinators/Staff. The faculty member will also work with other College divisions (like Technology and Computer Sciences, Nursing and Health Sciences) and Community partners such as Washington County Public Schools, etc.


  • Faculty Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: A faculty member is expected to prepare for and teach 15 credits per semester. Overload teaching is available for most Faculty and at times is strongly encouraged to meet student course demands. Faculty are required to hold a minimum of 5 office hours per week during the semester.
  • Assessment: Faculty members are expected to assess learning outcomes at the course, discipline, program and college levels.
  • Student Advisement: A faculty member should be able to advise students on courses, programs and career/transfer objectives (with support from Student Services).
  • Student Advocacy: A faculty member should be committed to student learning/success. The Faculty member should be available to help students as may be needed.
  • Curriculum Development: A faculty member must be current in his or her field and transfer that knowledge to students in course content and teaching delivery, as well to curriculum updates.
  • Recruitment and Marketing: A faculty member is a College ambassador with special obligations to promote his/her discipline or program to students and to the local community.
  • Shared Governance: A faculty member participates in all levels of shared college governance, including departmental, divisional and institutional-wide activities.
  • Professional Development: A faculty member maintains an approved professional development plan that supports the college’s strategic goals.
  • College Service: A faculty member is expected to serve the College in activities addressing departmental responsibilities, and/or community outreach, and/or student and campus life activities.
  • Community Service: A faculty member serves the College in voluntary community service activities that positively reflect the College’s image and is not in conflict with the College’s strategic goals or faculty responsibilities.

Essential Teaching Duties:

  • In addition to the regular faculty responsibilities listed above, the Biology faculty will:
  • Teach day-time, evening, online and/or weekend sections from the following Biology lecture and laboratory courses:
  • Introductory Biology: BIO 106 – Unity and Diversity of Living things, BIO 113/BIO 114 Principles of Biology I and II (Majors- level course)
  • Upper level biology courses: BIO 203/204 – Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II, BIO 205 Microbiology, BIO 206 Nutrition for Health Sciences;
  • Examples of other courses: BIO 110 Human Biology, BIO 116 Human Anatomy & Physiology for Allied Health, BIO 112 – Biology of Disease and Pandemics; BTC 101 – Introduction to Biotechnology, BTC 103 – Forensic Science, BTC 120 Cell Culture and Cell Function; CHM 101 – Introductory College Chemistry, or other courses as needed.
  • Collaborate with Division faculty to develop foundation/curriculum documents for classes and oversee assessment of course learning outcomes at the program and/or course level(s) as required.
  • Mentor/Supervise adjunct faculty. Duties related to this function may include (but is not limited to) book orders, dissemination of all relevant course materials/guidelines and requirements; classroom observations, and data collection.
  • Collect common course assessment data for assigned classes and analyze according to division guidelines and completion of the Student Learning Outcome Assessment (SLOA) reports).
  • Collaborate with college faculty when needed to redesign curriculum as necessary to meet the needs of programs and transfer pathways requiring BIO courses to include laboratory skills, instrumentation, web-based and hybrid sections. Provide input needed for Unit Planning (funding, equipment needs, curriculum changes etc.).


This position requires a minimum of a master’s degree in either Biology, Botany, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology or other closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate documentation of successful teaching experience at the community college/undergraduate level. A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field is a plus. Experience with curriculum development, outcomes assessment, and/or grant writing is very desirable.


Candidates should possess excellent written, oral and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administration and community partners. Candidates should have experience with online course learning management systems (D2L, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) and online publisher-based learning systems (Pearson’s Mastering, McGraw Hill Connect, WileyPlus, Cengage, etc.). Candidates must possess foundational skills in the laboratory and field settings and be able to convey these skills and methodologies to students. The candidate should be able to use sophisticated laboratory equipment including but not limited to: Lab-Quest Vernier probe-ware (or similar), Microscopes, Electronic Balances, instrumentation (PCR, Spectrophotometers, Electrophoresis etc.). Experience with faculty advising is preferred.
