Summary: The Human Resources Manager will manage the daily functions related to Human Resources (HR) for the institution including screening, interviewing, recruiting, and onboarding employees; administering pay, benefits, and leave functions; and enforcing institutional policies and practices. The Human Resources Manager reports to the Director of Finance and Administration and is an exempt, full-time benefited position based in Savannah, Georgia.

Responsibilities include (Incumbent may perform other duties as assigned):

Develop, revise, implement, maintain, and oversee the institution's administration and management of the policies and procedures related to, but not limited to, human resource management, office services, and facilities.

Work with management and legal counsel, manage and update the Employee Handbook to ensure compliance. Ensure implementation of HR policies and procedures. Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations. Recommend best practices and review policies and practices to maintain compliance. Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.

Administer the employee benefits programs; negotiate, review with management, and execute employee benefit packages including health insurance, life insurance, 403B and 457 retirement plans, etc.

Work with outside brokers, negotiate, review with management, and procure insurance policies including workers compensation, D&O, property, liability, auto, etc.

Lead non-executive hiring; work with managers to develop job recruitment ads and job descriptions including oversight of job postings, reviewing resumes, screening candidates to interview, notifying managers of potential candidates, checking references, and making job offers. Conduct or acquire background, reference checks, and employee eligibility verifications. Implement new hire orientation and onboarding with all incoming associates.

Prepare and maintain employee personnel files including updating changes to employee information. Be available to employees to explain HR policies, procedures, and benefits. Be available to respond appropriately to complaints and act as witness to and document performance counseling meetings.

Initiate, schedule, and ensure quarterly check-ins and annual performance reviews are conducted and properly documented by supervisors, to include leading the quarterly employee workplan reviews. Assist management with ensuring established goals and deadlines are met, by supporting team engagement and communications in the process. Responsible for internal communications to staff regarding material organizational updates.

Work with management and legal counsel, handling employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate parties. Attend and participate in employee disciplinary meetings, disputes, terminations, and investigations.

Manage the out-processing of employees leaving the institution.

Assist Director of Finance and Administration with the development, revision, implementation, and maintenance, of the institution’s technology and systems policies and procedures (including but not limited to local area network, peripheral hardware and software, internal/external communications, and other general office equipment and support systems).

Review and/or negotiate equipment leases and furniture purchases, coordinate equipment service and monitors usage. Assist Director of Finance and Administration with oversight and implementation of centralized ordering and processing of office supplies, computer supplies and services, etc.

Be available for weekend and evening work to support fundraising, programming, and marketing activities.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all phases of human resources and benefits administration. Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Perform well under pressure.
  • Excellent computer skills and understanding of information technology systems. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of administrative tasks and responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and produce highly accurate work. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and resourceful thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Education: Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field required.

Required experience: Minimum of five years professional experience in human resources management.

Preferred Experience: Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) certification and experience working for a non-profit entity at the national level.
