Student Success Advisor

Job Description

 

Student Success Advisor works within institutional guidelines and college policies to provide a learning-centered advising experience for students. With a focus on student success, exceptional communication and customer service, the Advisor works with 1) prospective students as they transition to the college and 2) current students as they matriculate through their program of study.

 
HOURS : Vary based on duties in and out of the office. At least one day per week: 9:00 am – 6:00pm.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The position reports to the Director, Student Success and Academic Advising and has the following responsibilities:

A. Create a welcoming, friendly, and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and the outside community.
B. Provide exceptional and innovative academic advising services to prospective and current students, individually or in groups, about College policies and programs of study.
C. Advise student about the possible consequences of academic decisions, and provide guidance to individual support services.
D. Collaborate and provide appropriate support to the Student Services front desk personnel.
E. Maintain productive relationships with area high school guidance personnel and work with Career and College Promise (CCP) students within the high schools as scheduled.
F. Assist with all phases of student recruitment, such as high school visitations, career fairs, college days, open houses, and informational sessions.
G. Prepare formal data collection reports in a timely manner.
H. Attend program advisory meetings as assigned.
I. Review, interpret, and evaluate applicant test scores and other relevant information to determine the academic status of prospective and current students.
J. Participate in opportunities for professional development, such as workshops, conferences, and trainings.
K. Participate in the coordination of new student orientation, registration, and graduation.
L. Perform other duties which support the mission and initiatives of the College.
M. Maintain a clean and safe work area.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to articulate professional responses to common inquiries and/or complaints from students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.
  • Ability to write using proper grammar and punctuation.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management, students, faculty, staff, or the public at-large.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to apply and understand standard mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
 


REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
 
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of barriers faced by first generation economically disadvantaged college students

 

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor or Master’s degree related to student development, counseling, human services, education, or an academic related field. Experience/proficiency in the use of various software packages, effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to coordinate and prioritize duties

 

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in education, or a related academic field; Experience in academic advising, higher education administration, or online learning is preferred. Experience in online educational settings and work with students from diverse backgrounds.
