About Us

The Health and Welfare Council of Long Island (HWCLI) is dedicated to improving the lives of Long Island’s most at-risk residents by responding to their needs through the promotion and development of public policies and direct services. HWCLI serves as a convening body; representing, and supporting the organizations that serve Long Islanders; and illuminating the issues that critically impact our region. HWCLI organizes community and regional responses to and supports advocacy; research; policy analysis, services, information and education. Since 1947, HWCLI has served as the umbrella for health and human service agencies serving Long Island’s families. As a regional human service provider, convener and leader with a 200-organization network, HWCLI responds to Long Island’s needs through direct services and advocacy.

On Long Island, the nature of poverty and the needs of our communities are growing and changing, driven by the region’s evolving economy and demographics. Addressing the social challenges faced by Long Island’s most at-risk is only possible through innovative strategies and the forging of strong partnerships across all sectors: government, business, and nonprofits. Collaboration with its network of 200 agencies and partners has been the highest priority for HWCLI as it worked on sector-wide coordination, client services, and advocacy to effect change in its areas of focus: disaster recovery; economic stability; health care access; and nutritional security. HWCLI serves those most at risk of experiencing poverty: seniors, recent immigrants, people of color, veterans, people with disabilities and female-headed households with small children. In addition to advocacy and sector-wide coordination, HWCLI provides direct services to nearly 50,000 at-risk Long Islanders.

Position

HWCLI is looking for a talented, highly experienced, strategic President & Chief Executive Officer (President/CEO) to lead a dynamic and growing team and programs into the next phase of HWCLI’s growth. The President & CEO will bring vision and strategic thinking, exceptional communications, management, organizational leadership, and fundraising skills, as well as a strong commitment to the health and well-being of the citizens of Long Island.

The President & CEO will work closely with and report to the Board of Directors to develop HWCLI’s priorities. The President & CEO provides direction and leadership for HWCLI's mission and vision, represents and speaks for HWCLI, the non-profit sector and community allies to advance the organization's mission and social justice on Long Island.

The successful candidate will have experience leading a human service growing organization and will be mission-driven, and a strong partnership builder.

The President & CEO must be flexible to be both strategic and responsive and is responsible for the overall financial stability of the organization, the success of its programs and initiatives, its personnel and its continued growth trajectory.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Vision and Leadership

· Provide strategy, vision, and leadership in service of HWCLI’s mission, building a strategy that strengthens the organization and imagines new possibilities for growth.

· Ensure HWCLI has the appropriate tools and resources to support HWCLI’s extensive programs in delivering high-quality services to its clients.

· Serve as an inspiring leader and partner both internally and externally.

· Develop and maintain strong relationships with Board members, elected officials (local and state), and partners from other community-based organizations and funders.

· A creative change agent with a deep acumen to navigate government, social service and healthcare structures and effect systems change.

· Attracting and maintaining a diversified workforce to assist in addressing HWCLI's overall mission and investing in talent development, building a pipeline for growth within the organization.

· Supervise and lead the senior management team supporting projects, programs and individual growth.

· Grow, develop and nurture relationships with the Board of Directors, creating strong leadership ambassadors for the organization.

Management and Operations

· Lead a dedicated, passionate, team committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all Long Islanders.

· Lead and oversee the senior leadership team to ensure the delivery of high quality, innovative and responsive programs.

· Support the staff by ensuring the capacity and infrastructure needed to cultivate a thriving, healthy, and successful work environment.

· Oversee and ensure the financial health of HWCLI including working closely with the Board and Fiscal Director to develop long and short-term financial plans.

· Together with the Board of Directors develop the vision and strategy for the organization.

· Work closely with members of the senior leadership team to ensure operations are being executed in accordance with the organization's policies.

· Establish and maintain an effective system of communications throughout the organization.

· Oversee the adequacy and soundness of the organization's financial structure ensuring a timely and accurate budget, expenditure vouchers and other fiscal submissions.

Fundraising

· Strategize and prioritize fundraising efforts and oversee implementation.

· Strong fundraising experience including with foundations, corporate partnerships, foundations, and individual donors.

· Build and maintain strong relationships with state and local officials regarding funding opportunities

· Ensure HWCLI has robust, comprehensive and strategic fundraising plans to cultivate and engage individual and institutional donors.

· Maintaining and expanding the financial stability of the organization.

· Oversee the development of major new large grant-funded and government initiatives, such as the 1115 Medicaid Waiver, Environmental prevention work and other new and emerging opportunities.

Partnerships and External Communications

· A highly visible leader with strong, established relationships with the diverse nonprofit sector, philanthropy, government, school districts regional business associations and universities, who can readily foster connections.

· A regional thinker able to partner and present strongly in both the high-level advocacy and policy arena as comfortably as from a grass-roots, community space.

· A skilled public speaker able to inspire action and bring people together in the nonprofit sector, elected officials and other varied audiences.

· An educator, able to work with various forms of media to improve understanding of the regional challenges associated with segregation and cost of living and to craft message and market strategies that bring solutions to the public.

· A deep knowledge of human services on Long Island and comfortability navigating complex issues impacting clients and colleagues.

· Develop a strategy to maintain and enhance HWCLI’s public image and relations

· Be the face and voice of HWCLI

· Represent HWCLI with partners, state and local officials, funders, and the community.

· Provide a voice for the most at-risk on Long Island on the local, State and

Federal Level, nurturing these relationships to be called upon as a consistent voice.

· Work closely with local, State and Federal advocates to ensure the Long Island perspective on policy and budgetary implementations

· Convene and facilitate conversations among Long Island community advocates that are both reactionary and proactive as it pertains to vulnerable and marginalized populations

· Speak publicly (planned and unplanned) on a range of issues covered by HWCLI to a cross section of audiences to further the efforts and mission of HWCLI

· Continue the expansion of HWCLI communication platform and reach.

Qualifications include:

· Deep experience in nonprofit and/or for-profit management, with strengths in strategic visioning, fundraising, sound business acumen.

· 10+ years of visionary leadership and management experience leading and motivating high-performing teams in a complex organization or company.

· Strong entrepreneurial acumen with prior financial and operations responsibilities, is a plus.

· Strong fundraising experience, including building, leading and operating large-scale events

· Experience and/or capacity to build strong relationships.

· Demonstrated experience working successfully with multi-sector stakeholders and engendering trust

· Passion for HWCLI’s mission, vision and core values with the ability to communicate passion to others.

· Strong communication skills to effectively and independently communicate with diverse audiences and network collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.

· Experience working with Boards of Directors, major donors, foundations, state and local government officials, and the media.

Compensation:

The salary for this position starts at $180,000. Employee benefits include generous paid time off, generous medical and dental and vision coverage, and 403(b) retirement savings plan with an employer contribution after one year.
