Overview

The Community Outreach Specialist will demonstrate expertise in cancers and in working with medically underserved populations and communities. The overall responsibility includes conducting cancer prevention education sessions about prostate, colon, testicular cancers affecting men and those assigned male at birth, identifying new community-focused cancer education opportunities for medically underserved and at-risk populations, developing new community partnerships and maintain DFCI’s engagement in the community.

The Community Outreach Specialist works independently under the direction and guidance of a senior outreach specialist. In this highly visible position, the Community Outreach Specialist will have a solid foundation of health disparities and barriers to care that our historically underserved populations face. The role represents DFCI in the community and build strong partnerships with community-based agencies, city and state health departments, and internal and external health care providers and clinicians.  These programs and initiatives will be evaluated by the Specialists’ consistent and ongoing impact in the community, ability to meet department metrics and ability to maintain strong community relationships.

This position’s work location is partial remote with two or three days per week remote. The selected candidate may only work remote days from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Senior Community Outreach Specialist, the Community Outreach Specialist will:

  • Provide tailored cancer prevention education in multiple languages, both virtually and in-person
  • Develop evidence based and ethnically & culturally sound cancer prevention curriculum that serves as the framework for all educational programming
  • Take initiative to develop new community partnerships and expand Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s presence in our local/underserved communities
  • Attend and actively participates in internal and external meetings and community coalitions
  • Plan symposia, seminars, and other events to address community-identified cancer needs and goals.
  • Lead key initiatives and other strategic activities in service of a comprehensive community outreach approach
  • Fully participate as a key member of the Community Benefits Team in the development of the Community Health Needs Assessment, Implementation Plan, and other regulatory processes and initiatives
  • Track metrics and outcomes to evaluate the impact of the educational workshops 
  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of all program materials and data
  • Assures compliance with DFCI policies, procedures, regulatory agency requirements and ensures safe, efficient and effective delivery of quality care, in collaboration with department leaders
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. Will consider equivalent combination of relevant education and experience for individuals with extensive background in community outreach.
  • 3 plus years of experience working with diverse communities required
  • Background in health care, teaching, community organizing, public health, nursing, or social work preferred.
  • High level of digital literacy; ability to problem solve, manage, and engage large virtual audiences
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license required
  • Experience working with clinicians or in clinical settings

  • Builds and maintains a thorough working knowledge of Community Benefits and DFCI’s areas of expertise
  • Exceptional planning, strategy, analytic skills with demonstrated ability to drive multiple concurrent and complex projects to success within defined deadlines
  • Deals well with uncertainty and ambiguity; flexible with changes in prioritization and approach
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency required including expert Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel skills and other collaboration and/or project/project management tools
  • Ability to work well with other team members and support positive team environment
  • Strong leadership skills, as well as the ability to work closely and effectively with all levels of the organization
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently on new and existing projects
  • Strong client/results orientation, and effective teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain balance between attention to detail to ensure high quality deliverables, and ability to think and operate from a broader strategic lens
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, strong professionalism, a strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations effectively and efficiently; strong focus on delivering high-quality deliverables
