Job Description:

Title: Coordinator of Civic and Service Learning

Unit: MCCC Professional Staff, Grade 5, Special Programs Coordinator

Department: Office of Student Engagement

Reports to: Director of Student Engagement for Equity

Date: November 7, 2023

General Summary: The Coordinator of Civic and Service-Learning, under the general supervision of the Director of Student Engagement for Equity, manages activities of the Service-Learning Program and other Civic Learning, project-based, and integrative learning initiatives; including developing program goals and objectives, overseeing and organizing work activities for program staff, coordinating reporting and budget planning, regularly assessing program effectiveness, developing and implementing professional development workshops for faculty, and maintaining community partnerships and on-campus collaborations relevant to accomplishing program goals. The position supervises part-time fellows, interns, and student employees as supported by grants and other partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide administration and leadership for the Service-Learning Program and other civic and integrative learning initiatives, including men of color affinity groups:

  • Manage an active program of Civic and Service-Learning program involving our diverse students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with Civic and Service-Learning Faculty Fellow to promote, guide, and strengthen project-based service-learning
  • Organize and maintain all records and documentation, including Give Pulse system and data, department publications
  • Maintain records of civic and integrative learning activities and community partner contacts. Manage and maintain documentation related to the programs, including reviewing, modifying, and evaluating the significance of information in the program database
  • Support faculty assigned to lead short-term special projects designed to enhance civic, service, and integrative learning
  • Prepare general correspondence, reports, instructional materials, and budget recommendations related to the programs and contribute to the preparation of grant proposals/applications
  • Expand the variety of civic, integrative, and Service-Learning models available to students through civic learning opportunities, internal placements, collaborations with local schools, and project-based learning
  • Apply for and manage grants to support funding to advance civic and service-learning initiatives
  • Ensure regular civic engagement opportunities, including get-out-the-vote campaigns, voter registration, Constitution Day events, and political participation
  • Plan and implement civic-based experiences such as visits to Washington DC, Edward Kennedy Institute, Advocacy events at the Statehouse, and JFK Presidential Library
  • Continue to broaden and define Civic Learning and develop integrated Civic Learning initiatives
  • Hire, train, and supervise a Climate Action Americorp
  • Hire, train, and supervise a Merrimack Fellow
  • Hire, train, and supervise part-time student employees
  • Serve as the Student Government Advisor and support the Student Trustee
  • Offer opportunities for students to dialogue about ongoing current issues
  • Coordinate and facilitate social justice initiatives
  • Coordinate faculty and staff equity-minded dialogues in collaboration with the Chief Diversity Officer

Design and promote community service experiences both locally and abroad:

  • Maintain inventory of local and volunteering opportunities for students and update the Community Partners website
  • Support clubs as they seek local volunteering experiences
  • Plan and implement Service-related Alternative Spring Break; annually assess and reconsider the curriculum
  • Explore and create ways for faculty to volunteer; collaborate with Human Resources to systematize

Maintain and expand the quality of and opportunities for Service Learning and Civic Learning by:

  • Collaborating in the development of a Community Leadership Certificate Program including internships with community partners
  • Developing goals and implementing professional development workshops for faculty on using Service- Learning and other civic learning pedagogies to improve and update instructional practice and achieve discipline-specific or institutional learning outcomes
  • Improving the breadth and quality of service-learning and civic learning experiences
  • Maintaining positive and productive collaborations with community and civic partners, faculty, staff, and others working to enhance the College's engagement mission
  • Identify and supervise the training of new faculty to develop service-learning, project-based learning, and other civic learning options

Maintain, promote, and strengthen existing initiatives:

  • Research the best practices in civic learning, service-learning, and new models of integrative learning
  • Serve as primary contact for Massachusetts Campus Compact
  • Serve as primary contact for the NASPA LEAD initiative
  • Lead the college's efforts to resubmit for Carnegie Classification
  • Use assessment strategies to assess and improve service and civic learning in regard to discipline-specific and institutional student learning outcomes
  • Collaborate with other college departments, students, alumni, faculty, administrators, and supervisors in the coordination and implementation of program activities. Review the status of work, exchange information, and resolve problems
  • Manage relationships with community partners in service of the college's strategic plan
  • Focus new initiatives on the college's strategic goals, particularly as related to closing student achievement gaps, civic learning, experiential learning, project-based learning, and enhancing program completion through engagement
  • Create and enhance new initiatives that show promise for deepening the impact of civic, service, and integrative learning on students at the college
  • Continuously assess the program, support, and develop opportunities to recognize and showcase this work
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain and enhance professional skills and maintain a knowledge base of best practices in the field.
  • Advise assigned students on the course of study.
  • Perform related duties as directed.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree or higher in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Public Administration, Education Administration, or other field related to Civic and Service Learning
  • At least 3 years of administrative experience with civic/service learning, or other relevant work
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be substituted for the Master's Degree
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively to set and achieve common goals and the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • A demonstrated commitment to service in the community
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development and the use of outcomes assessment to drive curricular innovation and improvement
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the comprehensive community college mission
  • Experience implementing high-impact practices to engage students and promote student success
  • Bilingual skills a plus
  • Experience working with Navigate, Degree Works, Banner, Microsoft Office Suite, and student information systems

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $64,292 is the starting salary for a Grade 5 position with with a Master's Degree; actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Location: Lowell campus with occasional travel to Bedford as needed

 

Hours: 37.5 per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. This position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
