Human Resources Generalist

 

Position Overview:

The HR Shared Services Division within the Office of the Provost at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is seeking a dynamic and experienced HR Generalist to join our team. The HR Generalist will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive human resources support and service to faculty and staff within several academic units. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the success of VCU's academic community while advancing your HR career. This position is primarily remote (with occasional on-campus visits).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily HR operations, addressing and resolving routine HR matters and escalating more complex and unprecedented matters to the HR Business Partner.
  • Act as a trusted resource for faculty and staff, providing guidance and support for HR-related inquiries, conflict resolution, and performance management.
  • Collaborate with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and ensure a smooth onboarding experience.
  • Work with hiring managers and search committees to ensure search processes comply with University standards.
  • Assist employees with benefit enrollment and inquires, including health, retirement, and other employee benefits programs. Provide guidance related to policies, such as FMLA, overtime, and other leave administration. Stay current on benefit offerings and policy changes.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, state and federal employment laws, and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential HR records, including personnel files and electronic records. Generate reports and analyze HR data to support decision-making.
  • Work with senior HR team members to identify HR issues and support strategic solutions.
  • Provide offboarding guidance and assistance and ensure team's completion of related activities.
  • Manage contract administration and appointment renewals for adjunct faculty.
  • Co-facilitate trainings on new/existing HR policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Shared Services HR team on various HR projects, such as diversity and inclusion efforts, process improvements, etc.
  • Participate in the VCU HR community by attending HR Associate Committee meetings, career community events, and VCU HR training for HR Associates.
  • The HR Generalist must demonstrate a passion for supporting individuals in a diverse academic environment, have the ability to drive diversity and inclusion efforts, and create and sustain a culture of appreciation.
  • The HR Generalist must possess strong consultative skills with a proven ability to develop relationships and build partnerships with internal teams and stakeholders in a diverse organization.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of progressive HR experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • SHRM-CP Human Resources certification or equivalent Human Resources certification preferred.
  • Experience working in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • Outstanding customer service skills and a high degree of professionalism
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures relation to multiple areas of HR, such as: benefits, compensation, employee relation, recruitment, HRIS
  • Sound knowledge and ability to perform multiple HR functions
  • Ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and University policies and regulations
  • Ability to conduct activities and make decisions according to ethical standards
  • Ability to analyze and present information and maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and effectively prioritize assignments
  • Excellent oral and written communication in daily interactions
  • Proven ability to clearly articulate information and advise other professionals on policy and procedures
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately and with discretion
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, complete tasks without immediate supervision, and work with senior leaders to accomplish goals with the ability to lead and train
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
