POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the Special Resource Center Director performs services for students with disabilities in the areas of academic and educational guidance and counseling and provides assessment for learning disabilities. This faculty position provides educational plans, serves as an academic advisor to students with disabilities; determines eligibility for services; determines appropriate accommodations, participates in student recruitment and pre-registration activities; teaches DSPS approved courses; and serves as a resource person at the Center for students with learning disabilities. This position will work closely with the Dean of Student Services.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling

OR

Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and in possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or

completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary disabled students and services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

Counseling for students with disabilities; or

Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators

Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills

Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities

Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed

Experience using a case-management model of serving students, including confidential record-keeping procedures

Experience advising students in a post-secondary program

Experience using electronic student education plans, course placements, and student information systems and internet for academic and career planning

Experience collaborating with multiple service providers within the campus and the community

Experience working with non-traditional college students who face multiple outside barriers, such as poverty, parenthood, academic disadvantage, physical and/or emotional abuse, drug abuse and/or anxiety and depression

Effective oral and written communication skills

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
SALARY RANGE: $44.79 - $72.27 (depending upon education and experience)

Part-time faculty members are compensated on a semester basis according to the number of class hours assigned per semester and on cumulative semesters of instruction for the District.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Part time teaching assignment. Assignment may included teaching during days, evenings or weekends. A teaching demonstration may be required during the interview process.
