Our Programs

Salt Lake Peer Court is active in the Salt Lake, Granite, and Murray School Districts. Youth are referred for minor offenses by their school administration and/or law enforcement and have their offenses reviewed by a jury of their peers. Offenders receive “sentences” involving community service, reflection, therapeutic support, and /or reparations, guided by adults. The Peer Court process provides young people with a tremendous learning experience and allows youth who have veered off track the chance to change problem behaviors without a referral to juvenile court.

In We the People—The Citizen and the Constitution, middle and high school students study the Constitution generally, as well as diving deep into one or more provisions. They work as part of a panel representing their school to understand issues arising from the Constitution and gain experience in forming arguments around current issues in an adjudicated format in competition with other school classes.

LRE’s third program, established in 1980, is Mock Trial. A case with facts interesting to youth is written or revised by volunteer attorneys. School teams form; all receive a handbook containing the facts of the case, legal documents, and rules of procedure. Teams and their coaches prepare arguments for the case, and schools take a side, arguing against each other in front of volunteer lawyer judges.

We the People—Project Citizen is a curricular program for high school, middle school, and youth groups. Students learn how to monitor and influence public policy by researching a public policy challenge of interest to them in their community. Involved students create a proposed approach to/solution of the challenge, as well as the plan they would follow to enlist state/local authorities to adopt their proposed solution.
