Job Summary:

The Department of Psychiatry has an opening for a full-time Faculty (unclassified) NICU Psychologist/Perinatal Psychologist position.  

The Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine is recruiting a full-time psychologist and faculty member who will primarily provide clinical services in the Connections Program for High-Risk Infants and Families. As part of the Connections Program, this faculty member will provide clinical care to infants/young children, parents, and families in integrated inpatient and outpatient medical settings and outpatient behavioral health settings during the perinatal and early childhood periods, with a specific focus on families of infants with medical complications from pregnancy through early childhood. The Connections Program is a part of the Department of Psychiatry’s Women’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Service Line.

Key Responsibilities:

Outpatient Clinical Services in the Connections Program for High-Risk Infants and Families, Department of Psychiatry

  • Provide mental health services (individual, group, and couples/family) to women and partners with medical complications in the perinatal and/or neonatal period through in-person and telehealth modalities. There will be a specific focus on providing services to families who have a child born with medical complexities.
  • Provide brief mental health services to women and partners in the perinatal period, including those experiencing fetal, neonatal, and infant loss.
  • Provide developmental and cognitive testing for children ages 0-5 born with significant medical complexities and contribute to program development around this initiative.

Inpatient Clinical Services at University of Colorado Hospital

  • Complete health behavior assessments and interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Interventions in the NICU are provided to address factors related to the infant’s medical condition, health, and wellness.
  • Complete health behavior and mental health assessments and interventions in the labor and delivery units with women and families experiencing pregnancy complications.
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and interdisciplinary team rounds.
  • Provide consultation to multidisciplinary providers and staff in these units.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives in the NICU pertaining to family engagement.

Training/Education and Program Activities

  • Provide relevant didactics for learners across health disciplines.
  • Participate in supervision of psychology interns and fellows and other learners across health disciplines.
  • Design and deliver educational sessions/activities for staff, providers, and community providers related to mental health services for women, infants, and families with medical complications during or after pregnancy.
  • Engage in program development, quality improvement, program evaluation, and research activities as part of the Connections Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

The ranks are based on how many years a candidate has been licensed and if they want to pursue the promotions track.  

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor, Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:  

Instructor, Sr. Instructor, Assistant Professor:

  • 1-3 years of related (pick one: clinical/research) experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum degree qualifications: PhD and/or PsyD
  • Completion of an APA or CPA internship.
  • License or license-eligible in Colorado.
  • Clinical experience working in pediatric/clinical child psychology and/or the NICU and/or NICU follow-up clinics. 

Associate Professor:

  • 4-7 years of related (pick one: clinical/research) experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum degree qualifications: PhD and/or PsyD
  • Completion of an APA or CPA internship.
  • License or license-eligible in Colorado.
  • Clinical experience working in pediatric/clinical child psychology and/or the NICU and/or NICU follow-up clinics.
  • Evidence of significant contributions to the field of NICU psychology over an extended period in scholarship, teaching, and/or program development/clinical activity
  • Demonstration of national reputation in the field of NICU psychology 

Professor:

  • 7+ years of related (pick one: clinical/research) experience at rank or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum degree qualifications: PhD and/or PsyD
  • Completion of an APA or CPA internship.
  • License or license-eligible in Colorado.
  • Clinical experience working in pediatric/clinical child psychology and/or the NICU and/or NICU follow-up clinics.
  • Evidence of significant contributions to the field of NICU psychology over an extended period in scholarship, teaching, and/or program development/clinical activity.
  • Demonstration of international reputation in the field of NICU psychology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing therapy to women, parenting partners, and parent-infant dyads in the perinatal/neonatal periods.
  • Experience conducting developmental and/or cognitive testing in early childhood.
  • Demonstrated experience with infants, parents, and/or families in multidisciplinary team settings during pregnancy and post-partum during training or for at least one year post training.
  • Demonstrated experience working in integrated medical care settings (preferably obstetric and/or neonatal) during training or for at least one year post training.
  • Clinical experience in inpatient (e.g., NICU, Labor & Delivery) and/or integrated ambulatory settings (e.g., primary care, specialty pediatric care, obstetrics).
  • Experience providing therapy to perinatal patients.
  • Experience delivering infant mental health interventions.
  • Experience with child therapy, particularly in the context of developmental and/or behavioral challenges and children with medical complications.
  • History of publications as first author and/or evidence of professional presentations.
  • Clear evidence of clinical experience in specialty settings focusing on diverse and/or underserved populations. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following  

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, students, alumni, and administrative personnel at all levels including outside organizations and the public.
  • Clinical skill is required for conducting brief and targeted assessments in integrated care settings to provide short-term psychotherapy interventions, health and behavior change and triage for appropriate level of care.
  • Capacity for flexibility and adaptability in different work situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentations to community audiences.
  • Experience developing, training and supervising psychology trainees.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.
  • Knows and applies best practices in diversity and inclusion practices or has knowledge and understands cultural differences.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

PhD and/or PsyD

Instructor, Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor: $105,000 to $120,000

Associate Professor: $130,000 to $145,000

Professor: $175,000 to $205,000  

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
