Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Lead Pharmacy Technician (Research) within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Lead Pharmacy Technician (Research) position is to assist the department in all aspects of pharmacy practice consistent with a Certified Pharmacy Technician’s scope of practice as it relates to investigational agents. In addition to the technical role, will be responsible for auditing and stocking of investigational and routine medications as well as proper storage, distribution, packaging, and labeling of investigational drugs, and associated recordkeeping. Responsible for all audits associated with clinical trials and investigational drugs with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and its partner and affiliate organizations.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in all areas within the Pharmacy Department. Serves primary role in training new technical staff and maintains “trained” status of current technicians.
  • Responsible for and maintains adequate inventory levels in pharmacy, and/or assigned infusion areas; including controlled substance stock. Checks for and removes expired medication from stock.
  • Responsible for and performs the necessary tasks related to patient treatment, ensuring that the investigational stock is available on the day of treatment.
  • Performs billing duties.
  • Works with Department of Pharmacy at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to ensure drug availability.
  • Performs general Pharmacy Technician role as needed.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the integrity of laminar airflow hoods by cleaning, maintaining certification and following procedures to ensure aseptic technique.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and possess a Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
Certifications/Licenses
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A minimum of five (5) years as a Pharmacy Technician, which includes at least three (3) years of oncology related experience including preparation of hazardous drugs, management of investigational drugs and proper use of a clean room.
  • Requires completion of chemotherapy certification course and USP 797 certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written English communication skills required.
  • Must be computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and generalized knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position requires frequent sitting, standing and walking; moderate lifting (up to 10 pounds); verbal communication (talking, hearing). Pressure to complete workload demands combined with the need to assure accuracy in every situation may create periods of stress. Cannot have health restrictions that would prevent working in a clean room.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment and clean room environment, with moderate to high noise. Good conditions, IV preparation exposes employee to “clean” needle stick injury. Chemotherapy preparation requires some exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and medications. Detailed procedures including the use of protective apparatus and equipment are followed to minimize or eliminate exposure.
