Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Assistant (Community Outreach Specialist) within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Program Assistant (Community Outreach Specialist) implements and presents health education programs and is responsible for curriculum development and/or the implementation of health education for the Rutgers Cancer Institute, the Screen NJ Program and related efforts in the Rutgers Cancer Institute’s department of Cancer Health Equity and Engagement. This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, outreach, training, program delivery and evaluations, communications and event participation.
 
Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Performs community level engagement and outreach needs assessment.
  • Participates in community advisory council and workgroup meetings and focus groups.
  • Researches, identifies and utilizes evidence-based educational programs.
  • Writes, designs, and manages the production and distribution of visually appealing, culturally and literacy appropriate educational programs (i.e. content for brochures, e-newsletters, program development, event materials, info graphics), media press releases, and other communications/marketing materials. 
  • Applies community demographic and health information data to engagement and outreach activity development and delivery.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Nursing or a related discipline, plus one (1) year of related experience in a business office, government agency or university setting required. 
  • Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements. 
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, writing and interpersonal skills required.  
  • Significant in-state travel to partner locations and program events may be required. 
  • Must have access to a reliable car, or other means of transportation, for travel around the state to meetings and events with partners (mileage and tolls are reimbursed at standard University / Federal rates).  
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree plus 1 year of community outreach research experience and public health research experience conducting community-based research is preferred. 
  • Effective oral and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to hold self-accountable to high standards of professional excellence, demonstrated to maximize resources and be resourceful, seeks and accepts personal and professional responsibility on a continued basis. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health, healthcare, and health education principles and practices preferred.
  • Strong interest in health disparities preferred. 
  • Fluent in Spanish or Hindi desired.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 40 lbs. (to move project supplies, set-up and break-down event equipment, etc.) 
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate noise.
