Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. The One Health Institute (OHI) at Colorado State University (CSU) is a unit that facilitates research activities at the intersection of human, animal and environmental health. The institute supports transdisciplinary research that spans all eight colleges at CSU and provides infrastructure and framework for collaborative engagement, networking and teaming to find solutions to complex problems.
Position Summary
We seek a research associate data specialist who is a highly motivated and collaborative individual and capable of independent reasoning. The successful candidate will be meticulous, detail-oriented, and familiar with large, collaborative ecology/biology projects that require data organization in relation to analysis and project success. They will play a critical role in securing the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of metadata across multiple collaborating laboratories. The data specialist will work closely with faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students to implement and maintain data quality standards, execute precise quality control processes, collection and collation of data collected by multiple groups, development of SOPs relating to data ownership and management, and contribute to the improvement of the data management system.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Biomedical Science or related discipline with experience in data collection and curation of at least one year professional experience, which can include undergraduate research.
  • The successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work productively as a member of a large and diverse research team.
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills to support existing and future data management, storage, and sharing efforts.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Management of database software such as Excel, Access, SQL, and/or lab archives, and experience in designing and implementing data quality control procedures and protocols is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ‘big data’ and ‘omics datasets in particular, microbiome data, is highly desirable. The candidate should have excellent writing and communication skills, problem solving aptitude, and experience working with a diverse research team.
  • Candidates with experience designing or revising existing dataset is highly desired.
  • Effective time management and self-motivated preferred. The ideal candidate is curious and excited to learn new things every day; unafraid to ask questions to gain understanding; persistent about getting answers.
  • A broad spectrum of scientific knowledge and familiarity with public data repositories, such as NCBI, Dryad, Qiita, to support researchers with publications is desired.

Essential Duties

  • Assist in developing BROADN nomenclature and metadata requirements as directed by scientific counsel, supervisor, and BROADN Team.
  • Implement protocol for metadata conformity and completeness checks.
  • Create uniform sample ID number that is in a consistent format that is agreed upon by team members.
  • Organize and maintain research data in a structured and accessible manner.
  • Create and update research data files, folders, and documentation for easy retrieval and reference.
  • Perform regular data quality checks to identify and correct errors, inconsistencies, or missing information in the data.
  • Identify and link relevant external datasets (e.g. sensor data from the NEON tower network).
  • Identify data quality issues and collaborate with team to develop and implement corrective measures.
  • Work closely with all team members including PIs, faculty, post-docs, PhD students and undergrads to develop metadata standards, SOPs, and ensure alignment of data quality
  • Communicate data summary and recommendations to team in a clear and concise manner. Assist with ad hoc reports regarding data storage and sharing.
  • Perform regular data quality checks to identify and correct errors, inconsistencies, or missing information in the data.
  • Collaborate with institutional researcher staff, analytics staff, administrators, faculty, and other staff to gather data, understand data needs, and provide support for data-related inquiries.
  • Work with CSU IT professionals, supervisor, science council and other key stakeholders to ensure storage and computational needs are met and manage controlled access to data.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of data management processes, data dictionaries, and standard operating procedures
