The Instructional Designer/LMS Specialist provides support and training in the use of the Learning Management System and campus-wide academic technologies. The Instructional Designer/LMS Specialist researches and recommends new academic technologies and assists faculty with the application of effective instructional techniques and technology use in online, blended, and in-person modalities. The Instructional Designer/LMS Specialist also plays a significant role in other college initiatives, such as ensuring the accessibility of online course content, assisting in the development of Open Educational Resources, supporting the academic and co-curricular assessment practices of the College, and encouraging the principles of Universal Design for Learning in all course formats.

The Instructional Designer/LMS Specialist shall be directly responsible to the Director of Information Technology.

Job Duties

The Instructional Designer/LMS Specialist will accomplish the following job duties by working closely with faculty and academic administrators, collaborating with members of the Information Technology Department, engaging other employees across all areas of the College, and demonstrating WSCC Core Values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provide leadership to and coordinate the college’s instructional design functions.
  • Collaborate with faculty, administration, and IT staff to identify online learning strategies that would benefit WSCC students and faculty and to incorporate those best practices into the learning environment whenever possible.
  • Assist faculty with the application of effective technology use in online, blended, and in-person modalities.
  • Administer, coordinate, and manage educational software including the LMS, LTI integrations, and other developmental resources.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to the LMS and its connected applications. When necessary, work with vendors to help resolve issues.
  • Train, educate, and guide faculty and staff on Open Educational Resource adaptation, production, and implementation.
  • Support faculty with sound instructional design techniques to enhance the college assessment process.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of LMS, educational software, and instructional design professional development for faculty, staff, and students using a variety of learning modalities.
  • Create and maintain documentation, actively participate in cross-training, and facilitate information and documentation sharing.
  • Work with other members of the Information Technology Department to address Help Desk tickets.
  • Provide immediate response to problems and emergency situations affecting normal LMS operations.
  • Assist in the evaluation and deployment of educational and operational software and hardware resources.

  • Serve on college-wide teams as they relate to educational technology, instructional design, and other related subjects.
  • Participate in identified professional associations, workshops, and meetings relevant to the position.
  • Prepare and present, both orally and in written form, conclusions and recommendations concerning complex matters to all partners.
  • Seek out and attend professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain the security of information systems.
  • Maintain and safeguard equipment, software, and facility areas.
  • Maintain a safe work environment.
  • Comply with College policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, or equivalent field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and/or training that includes instructional design, educational technology, media production, and learning management system use or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience and/or training that includes Learning Management System Administration.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Universal Design for Learning.
  • Higher education teaching experience.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical terminologies and material in a straightforward manner.
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge of the following is desired but not required for hire -experience using screen, video, and audio-capturing applications; experience using Open Educational Resources and educational technology to support student learning and assessment; knowledge of usability/accessibility requirements, universal design strategies in blended and online learning environments, and technology issues specific to virtual delivery of professional development; experience administering or using the Canvas Learning Management System and Canvas Studio.

Compensation range $52,615 - $69,597 is commensurate with skills/experience, and includes a full benefit package including health/dental/vision insurance, retirement, onsite wellness center, educational assistance, WSCC tuition waiver for employee and dependents and generous paid time off.
