Postdoctoral Appointee – Developing a novel simulation platform to guide coherence-enhanced high energy diffraction microscopy

Argonne

Job Description

The X-ray Science Division (XSD) at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to develop a materials modeling platform capable of providing real-time actionable information to guide the in-situ experiments conducted at a high-energy x-ray instrument located at the new High Energy X-ray Microscope (HEXM) beamline at 20-ID of the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

The HEXM beamline, coming online as a part of the APS Upgrade project in late April 2024, is envisioned to deliver a suite of characterization techniques capable of imaging polycrystalline materials and their hierarchical features spanning macroscopic to nanoscopic length scales in a single experimental setup. In particular, it will be home to the high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM)[1] and high-energy Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (HE-BCDI) capable of mesoscale and nanoscale characterization, respectively.

We are interested integrating these in situ high-energy X-ray techniques with a modeling platform to understand the effect of irradiation on material strength and accumulation of damage. In particular, we are interested in a modeling platform capable of conducting concurrent simulations based on HEDM using high-performance computing resources at Argonne National Laboratory and providing feedback to guide the in-situ experiment.

This position will work with the Postdoctoral hire under Req 416674 and a multi-disciplinary team of Argonne scientists spanning several divisions including XSD, Materials Science Division, Nuclear Science and Engineering Division, and Applied Materials Division to build the simulation-guided experimental framework capable of executing zoom-in / zoom-out capabilities to investigate the effect of irradiation on structural materials guided by materials simulation.
