This is a two-year position with opportunity for renewal based on funding and performance. The position will include a full-time benefits package.

Purpose

The Meyers Lab at The University of Texas at Austin is immediately seeking an Associate Director (AD) of Modeling to lead a wide range of modeling activities funded by a five-year CDC grant entitled “Center for Implementation in Outbreak Analytics and Disease Modeling: Multi-Scale Outbreak Decision-Support Tools.” The AD will guide the refinement of validated outbreak forecasting and decision-support tools and the integration of such tools into the outbreak management operations of local and state public health partner agencies. The AD will also provide team leadership providing decision support analyses for local, state, and national public health agencies in response to infectious disease threats. Ability to interact with peers, clients, stakeholders, and diverse communities and exhibit sound judgment in decision making.


Responsibilities

Function 1: Center Leadership

As a member of the Center for Pandemic Decision Science, the AD will be responsible for overseeing the modeling team tasked with taking validated models and scaling them for broader use across the US and globe. The AD will provide scientific oversight of the model development and analyses. The AD will work with PIs and other co-Is to ensure the goals and deliverables of the CDC grant are met and meet the needs of collaborators.

Function 2: Team and Project Management

Serve as the point person for the modeling team which includes faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and programmers. Mentor postdocs and graduate students to ensure professional development in infectious disease modeling.

Function 3: Collaboration and Dissemination

Work with PIs and co-Is to ensure strong communication between public health, industry, academic institutions, and community partners. Translate needs and feedback into modeling and optimization deliverables. Disseminate results to scientists, public health agencies, and the general public via publications, talks, and media.

Function 4: Ad Hoc

Other related functions as assigned.  Occasional work week in excess of 40 hours may be needed when working on special projects or during public health emergencies.


Required Qualifications

PhD in a quantitative science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related discipline, with expertise in outbreak modeling. Multiple years of experience in scientific mentorship and/or project management. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to multitask. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate administrative information to technical and non-technical team members at various levels. Strong listening skills and a focus on project goals. Professional and reliable attitude and attendance. The position will also require the ability to work quickly on time-sensitive needs and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team over multiple communication platforms. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Multiple years of experience in designing, validating, and applying mathematical models of outbreak dynamics and control. Experience collaborating with diverse communities and public health professionals. 


Salary Range

$150,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

  • Flexible: 40 hours/week is required, and most of this time should be during normal business hours (e.g., 9:00am-5:00pm), although numbers of hours/day and days/week can be negotiated and may change depending on what projects are being pursued.
