Title Postdoctoral Research Positions in Biogeochemistry of Global Contaminants Research Group, Harvard University
School Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Department/Area Environmental Science and Engineering
Position Description
Two postdoctoral positions are available on an interdisciplinary NSF-funded project aimed at developing an integrated modeling framework to quantify the impact of global pollution releases on human and wildlife exposures, including an examination of impacts on culture. Specifically, this project is examining social drivers behind ongoing seafood consumption beyond recommended health guidelines, drawing upon the case study context of the Faroe Islands. Findings from this place-based research, along with analyses of existing international pollution policies (i.e., the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) will be used to develop a framework for international ocean pollution governance that is applicable to various sites and contexts, offering decision-makers a multimedia toolkit of valuable strategies to safeguard culturally significant marine resources from ongoing threats of ocean pollutants.
Role and Responsibilities:
The successful candidates will work closely with a diverse team of researchers spanning various natural and social science disciplines, along with societal partners. The position will be co-supervised by Profs. Elsie Sunderland (Harvard) and Yoshi Ota (University of Washington). The primary focus will be to assess existing governance frameworks and to develop innovative approaches to govern marine pollution and inform public health policy.
Key tasks include:
  • Analyze major obstacles and enablers of institutional change in the context of marine pollution governance.
  • Contribute to the development of a framework for creating innovative governance schemes based on co-creation, engagement, and participation of stakeholders, especially Indigenous populations whose food sovereignty depends on marine resources.
  • Develop guidelines for policy reforms and policy briefs with recommendations on the science-policy-society interface and on how to foster community-led initiatives to secure food sovereignty.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of the research findings of the project.
Basic Qualifications
PhD in anthropology or a related field with a focus on marine governance, institutional change, or Indigenous media.
Additional Qualifications
  • Be well versed in the environmental social sciences, its theories and concepts, and its research methods, in particular marine anthropology and Indigenous media studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of marine pollution, health disparities and food sovereignty, or environmental justice.
  • Demonstrated qualitative research skills, and affinity with media research methodology and critical discourse analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific writing and communication skills, as well as relevant collaborative and social skills.
  • Ambition and skills to collaborate with national and international partners in an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Preferable: Field experience in marine pollution-related topics or Indigenous media studies, focusing on coastal states and communities.
