Job Description


This is a part-time 50% Contract position for one year. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

This position is located in the Rady School's Sullivan Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Nationally recognized, the Sullivan Center fosters a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship with the goal of increasing the translation of research discoveries into technologies, products and processes that benefit society while supporting entrepreneurial training and venture creation.

The Senior Program Manager designs, plans, and implements new startup, innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives open to all UCSD students (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral), faculty, researchers, staff and UCSD alumni. The position creates and manages new initiatives with campus-wide impact, a campus-wide audience, and initiates stronger engagement with alumni and industry audiences. The position develops innovative programming related to business start-ups and entrepreneurship skill-building marketed to on-campus audiences and externally with alumni, Sullivan Center donors, sponsors, industry alliances, high-level mentors, law firms, incubators, business development organizations, granting agencies, government organizations, and UCSD alumni.

This position Independently advises alumni, researchers, and students on the development of new entrepreneurship ventures and educates entrepreneurs in the steps required in company formation and the different strategies that may be employed to do so. The Senior Program Manager uses expert knowledge to provides customized feedback, based on awareness of the product life cycle and business life cycle of a specific entrepreneurial idea or entity. The position analyzes business proposals provided by entrepreneurs and uses expertise to advise entrepreneurs in terms of the resources required to progress the business plan, and frequently providing introductions to those resources.

The position represents the Center and the Rady School in developing alliances with senior industry partners and the business community, other corporate ventures, external entrepreneurs and executives to promote and benefit UCSD entrepreneurs and startup companies. The position manages industry alliances and campus-wide initiatives and outreach programming that reflect the Rady School's goals of promoting innovation and commercialization of business ideas.

The position exercises initiative and independence in initially analyzing and identifying the needs of those interested in both the innovation economy and entrepreneurship activities. Subsequently the Senior Program Manager may design, lead, and/or manages campus-wide entrepreneurship-focused programs. The position independently engages and manages relationships with high-level networks of executives, seasoned entrepreneurs, and industry innovators-curating and aligning their skills, experiences and interests in providing content, mentorship, advising and investment for the Center’s student, alumni, and faculty stakeholders.'

  • Note: This position is hybrid, requiring some on-campus presence, yet also allowing for off-campus/remote work. It is a 50% contract position with a schedule to be determined. It is expected that there will be some evening hours due to the need to meet with entrepreneurs and due to some programming schedules.

The position is required to be in-person in San Diego an average of 2 days per week.

  • A cover letter along with the resume is preferred.
  • Graduation from college with a major in business administration, economics, educational administration, science, engineering, or an allied field, and five years of experience promoting entrepreneurship, formation of new companies, creating/implementing educational programs related to business/entrepreneurship and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Expertise in entrepreneurship, new business ventures, idea development, company formation. Solid experience analyzing new business venture ideas. Experience evaluating new business proposals in a variety of industries.

  • Experience providing formal feedback to entrepreneurs on business ideas. Solid experience advising entrepreneurs in the steps required in company formation. Rapport-building skills and entrepreneurship education to establish credibility with entrepreneurs.

  • Solid experience advising entrepreneurs regarding resources required to progress the business plan. Demonstrated experience introducing entrepreneurs to business resources and key business networks/connections.

  • Program management experience; experience developing strategic/operational plans for educational programming, experience developing budgets, and low cost marketing/ outreach strategies and social media plan for educational programs focused on entrepreneurship. Experience writing grant applications, providing reports to philanthropic organizations.

  • Experience forging alliances with industry, community organizations, industry membership groups, corporate associations, and academia?

  • Demonstrated track-record of building collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies. Five years or more experience establishing multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental, and multi-institutional work groups, networks, committees, programs, conferences, and panels regarding innovation, entrepreneurship, science/technology, tech commercialization and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience giving presentations to small and large audiences both locally, nationally, and internationally, about scientific, business, or bioscience topics to a business/entrepreneurial audience. Rapport-building skills to respond to questions in a group setting in person, or via Zoom, regarding business/science/entrepreneurship topics.

  • Familiarity w/ Microsoft Office, Google Drive, shared drives, and other online systems. Administrative self sufficiency related to calendaring, spreadsheets, document creation, sharing documents on files, etc.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
