Chemistry and Biochemistry is one of the largest and most complex departments on campus. The department’s organization is divided among three major academic sections each with its own leadership (Section Chair and Vice Chair) representation under the Department Chair: Physical, Analytical & Environmental (PAE); Biochemistry & Biophysics (BB); and finally Synthesis, Materials and Chemical Biology (SMCB). The department is comprised of 73 ladder rank faculty, an additional 15 in various instructional titles, and ~150 in academic research titles and postdoctoral scholars. The department is comprised of 100 career staff; ~60 temporary or student staff, and 400 Master’s and Ph.D. students. There are 1,700 undergraduate students enrolling in 5 majors with total annual course enrollments exceeding 27,000. Chem/Biochem manages $30 million annually in extramural funding and approximately $63 million in total annual expenditures. The Department occupies space in 7 buildings, totaling 237,000 ASF, including class laboratories and instructional support space, research labs, and recharge facilities.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Student Affairs Director is responsible for the administrative management, planning, coordination, and supervision of the Student Affairs Unit (both undergraduate and graduate support staff) and for the Industrial Relations/Development Unit. The Director reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Vice Chairs for Undergraduate and Graduate Education, and supervises a team of 11 (2 direct, 9 indirect).

The primary duties of this position are to:

  • Provide analysis, development, implementation and refinement of new and existing academic programs, policies, affiliations and agreements.

  • Oversee management of resources, including strategies to maximize use of available funding. Identify new sources of academic program support (private, federal, university).

  • Provide short and long-term planning, management and coordination of Chemistry and Biochemistry's graduate student affairs funding.

  • Oversee Industrial Relations/Development operations with the goal of increasing academia-industry interactions (research collaborations, student placement, fund raising, etc.).

  • Serve as consultant to CAO, Vice Chairs for Education, Executive Committee, Senior Staff, and all faculty committees related to Student Affairs and Industrial Relations.

  • Supervise, motivate, and lead staff; oversee all unit hiring, performance evaluations, and operational needs.

This position has the possibility of a hybrid schedule, with 2 days a week remote.

  • Experience and advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques with ability to act as a facilitator, exercise diplomacy, tact, professionalism, responsiveness, a high degree of flexibility, and solve concerns between individuals in a fair and equitable manner.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to graduate and undergraduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department’s goals and objectives for student affairs.

  • Successful experience in recruiting, supervising, motivating and leading staff; in analyzing workflow and determining optimal staff configurations to meet operational and service needs; and in resolving performance problems and other personnel issues and concerns.

  • Skills, knowledge, and experience in conflict resolution, counseling, mediation, and acquisition of resources for crisis intervention from offices such as Student Psychological Services, Employee Relations, Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, and Labor Relations.

  • In-depth knowledge of post-degree employment opportunities and practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in researching, extracting, organizing and reporting statistical and informational data and carrying out complex analysis of data.

  • Budgetary management skills and ability to analyze financial operating data to determine costs, remain within budget and ensure cost-effectiveness. Skill to identify resource impact and needs.

  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership. Demonstrated ability to independently analyze complex problems, conduct research, interpret trends, identify various options, draw conclusions, develop and implement innovative and cost effective solutions that meet the objectives of the Department despite competing and changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts among staff, faculty and students with creativity and authority while maintaining a professional relationship. Ability to control situations or events in the absence of higher authority and ability to make recommendations or decisions that affect office operations and activities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group settings, taking into account differences in social, cultural, professional, and educational backgrounds.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team. Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish,maintain, develop and foster mutually beneficial relationships with on- and off-campus contacts and organizations. Excellent interpersonal skills to represent the department and UCSD in a wide variety of situations and to a diversity of populations.

  • Demonstrated strong skill in using computers and a wide variety of software packages for presentations, written communication, data processing, electronic communication, and automating processes.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,600 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.67 - $53.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
