General Notes

This is a two-year position with opportunity for renewal based on funding and performance. The position will include a full-time benefits package.

Purpose

The Meyers Lab and UT Center for Pandemic Decision Science at The University of Texas at Austin are immediately seeking outstanding postdoctoral scholars to contribute to modeling the spread, surveillance, forecasting, and control of COVID-19, influenza, RSV and other respiratory viruses. Research will be aimed at elucidating epidemiological characteristics, developing robust modeling tools to support outbreak preparedness and response efforts across the US, and providing decision-support for outbreak control efforts at the local, state and national levels.

We seek candidates with strong quantitative training in one or more of the following areas: (1) modeling of infectious disease dynamics, (2) statistics, machine learning and AI, (3) operations research and optimization. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology, strong coding skills, and interdisciplinary research experience.


Responsibilities

  • Identification and formulation of novel research questions of public health concern

  • Leading the development, validation, and application of disease dynamic models to address critical public health challenges

  • Dissemination of results to scientists, public health agencies, and general public via software code and tools, publications, reports, and presentations

  • Mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students

  • Act as a liaison and professionally represent the Meyers Lab and UT Center for Pandemic Decision Science with various stakeholders, including local, state, and national government agencies.


Required Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a PhD within 3 years in a quantitative science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related discipline. The position will also require the ability to work quickly on time-sensitive analyses and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.


Preferred Qualifications

Multiple years of experience in designing, validating, and applying mathematical models of outbreak dynamics and control. Experience collaborating with diverse communities and public health professionals. 


Salary Range

$70,000 + depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • Flexible work arrangement possible

  • Occasional evenings and weekends required

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation


Work Shift

  • Flexible: 40 hours/week is required, and most of this time should be during normal business hours (e.g., 9:00am-5:00pm), although numbers of hours/day and days/week can be negotiated and may change depending on what projects are being pursued.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
