Postdoctoral Research Associate Soft Inelastic X--ray Scattering (SIX)

Brookhaven Lab

Job Description

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) provides world-class capabilities for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS), offering ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (200 eV – 2000 eV), full momentum-control and novel opportunities for the sample-environment. The main goal of the SIX Beamline, which has been open to users since 2019, is to investigate the complex physics of quantum materials. The SIX Beamline Team focuses on the study of magnetic and electronic excitations in novel materials and unconventional superconductors, devices under-operation, laser-pumped metastable states, etc...

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Post Doctoral Research Associate who will work with the SIX Beamline Team and will: contribute to SIX operation activities, be involved in the development and commissioning of new instrumentation, accomplish novel scientific research by taking advantage of the unique performances of the SIX Beamline, and disseminate the work at conferences and through peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, as a member of the Soft X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy (SXSS) program, the selected candidate is welcome to collaborate with other members of the program as well as to utilize complementary research opportunities available at other beamlines, both within the SXSS program and within NSLS-II in general.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Marketing Title:

• Accomplish scientific research in novel quantum materials utilizing Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the SIX Beamline.
• Report the scientific results in academic papers and talks.
• Contribute to a fraction of user support activities.
• Participate in routine Beamline operations and instrumentation upgrade activities, to address scientific demand and maintain the beamline performances to the forefront.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• PhD. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline
• Experience in synchrotron-based soft X-ray techniques, ultra-high vacuum instrumentation, X-ray optics, and/or X-ray detectors.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work both independently and as a part of a multi-institutional team.
• Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, technical staff, and users.
• A good understanding of the physics of quantum materials.
• Demonstrated data analysis skills.
• Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience in X-ray absorption (XAS) and scattering techniques, such as x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.
• Experience with lab-standard sample characterization techniques and related equipment (transport measurements, single crystal diffraction, optical spectroscopy, etc...), electrode/material deposition and device testing techniques, and/or laser operation and laser pumping experiments.
• Good programming skills in Python or similar languages.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

• While based primarily at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the position may require some domestic and international travel.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is 68,400 -113,250. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
