Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Lab Assistant for the Child Health Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of Dr. Arnold Rabson, CHI Director, and Dr. Hsin-Ching Lin, Research Teaching Specialist II and Laboratory Manager, the Principal Lab Assistant (PLA) will assist with laboratory services and procedures including meeting the daily needs of the CHINJ research laboratories for clean, sterile glassware and for assuring maintenance of essential laboratory services such as performance of essential safety activities and monitoring and maintenance of common laboratory resources, such as the research-grade distilled water supply, carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen, and function of shared equipment. In addition, the PLA may perform specialized research activities under the direction of CHINJ principal investigators involving collection, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of research data; and may train laboratory staff in specific related procedures. The PLA will also perform other related laboratory duties as required. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs critical activities to ensure that clean and sterile glassware is available and accessible for CHINJ laboratories. Cleans, dries, sterilizes and distributes glassware and other washable items in accordance with established procedures. Autoclaves biomedical waste following established safety guidelines. 
  • Oversees and/or performs the maintenance and proper use of autoclaves, washer, ovens, x-ray film processor, and other related laboratory equipment. Instructs other employees on equipment use and maintenance as needed. 
  • Performs laboratory services including essential safety monitoring and maintenance of common laboratory resources, such as the research-grade distilled water supply, and shared equipment. 
  • Supports laboratory personnel in the receipt, unpacking, sorting, and opening of laboratory materials and laboratory safety equipment and apparel (such as lab coats).  
  • Assists CHINJ laboratories in technical and experimental procedures pursuant to the laboratory research activity, under the direction of the Director and the Laboratory Manager of CHINJ. Compiles, analyzes and maintains all data related to research activities. Prepares reports, databases, graphs, and charts as required.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Three (3) years of related laboratory experience. 
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand, or communicate in English, sufficiently to perform job duties. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Should be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to work in a laboratory environment.  Some lifting may be required:  office items and/or boxes; up to 30 lbs. Walking, standing, sitting is required.  Experience working in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Work Environment:  Must pass employee health clearance, TB Test and required safety training.  Must follow all safety precautions in the laboratory, as required.  Moderate noise; laboratory environment.
