Position description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) seeks applications for a postdoctoral employee in the area of observational studies of astronomical transient sources.

The TREx (Transients, Extragalactic) group at UC Berkeley, led by Profs. Raffaella Margutti and Ryan Chornock, is engaged in a wide variety of multiwavelength and multimessenger studies. Ongoing research subjects include electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) sources, fast blue optical transients (FBOTs), circumstellar interaction in supernovae (SNe), tidal disruption events (TDEs), superluminous supernovae, and transient host galaxies. Amongst other collaborations, the group is currently involved in the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE), the follow-up of GW sources within the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) on the Rubin Observatory. Additionally, UC Berkeley will be a founding member of the LS4 (La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey) project. Our group has active programs in the optical at Lick and Keck Observatories, as well as a wide variety of multiwavelength investigations at radio (VLBA, VLA, GMRT, ATCA, ALMA), UV (HST and Swift-UVOT), and high-energy (Swift, Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR) facilities. The successful candidates are expected to substantially contribute and/or lead some of the efforts above.

The day-to-day duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• interact and mentor graduate students and undergraduate students in the team

• plan, trigger, execute and analyze observations of transients.\

• contribute and lead proposals for telescope time

• lead and co-author the publications resulting from this research effort

• present these results at conferences/meetings
