The Student Center Operations team for Student Centers and Activities is committed to providing services, programs and resources to the Rutgers Community. This team is responsible for the management and oversight of the six student centers across the Rutgers – New Brunswick Campus.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Manager for the Department of Student Centers & Activities. The Assistant Manager supports the Associate Director of Busch and Livingston Student Centers (i.e. Center Director) in managing, planning, and coordinating the Busch Student Centers facilities, services, staff, and budgets. The Centers environment is expected to exude a welcoming, friendly, and inclusive atmosphere for a diverse Rutgers University Campus. The Busch Student Centers offer spaces and services, which accommodate, facilitate, and support students, student organization, University departments, Rutgers affiliates, and external agencies, organizations, and corporations. The Busch Student Center is open seven days a week for approximately 15 hours / day. The staff executes more than 5,300 events annually with over 173,000 attendees. University offices located in the Douglass Student Center include the School of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising, Career and Explorations Services, student organization offices, Dining Services, the Esports Center. In addition to the University offices in the center, the Douglass Student Center has one Rutgers Dining operated food options and 4 contracted vendors including Panera Bread and Moe’s. 
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • The Assistant Manager has responsibility for the daily operations of the Centers, which includes facility maintenance, repairs, supervision of assigned student employee areas, reservation fulfillment, onsite event management and customer support, and retail vendor services coordination.
  • Manages assigned budgets, assessment efforts, and special projects.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Meeting and Event Planning to manage the reservation fulfillment and event management at the Student Centers.
  • Supports achievement and completion of identified strategic efforts and projects of the Student Center Unit and Division of Student Affairs.
  • Through positive role modeling, actions, decisions, supervision, and coaching assists in ensuring the Student Centers & Activities Standards are consistently applied and upheld.
  • The Assistant Manager’s actions and decisions are a critical part of providing for a well-run, student-focused Student Center environment.
  • Provides support and coordination of day-to-day on-site facility-related work including building security, custodial maintenance, repairs, grounds services, work orders and small scale renovation projects.
  • The Assistant Manager is a secondary point of emergency contact for center-specific needs including sheltering students or members of the community in an emergency.
  • The Assistant Manager is designated as “essential personnel” and, depending on the emergency and its campus location, may have to report to duty per the University Adverse Weather Operating Status and Staffing Policy.
  • This position includes the supervision of student staff responsible for the implementation of services at the Centers.
  • Responsible for managing the successful fulfillment of all aspects of event management occurring in and adjacent to the Centers. This includes attending operations coordination meetings; reviewing and recommending changes to event details in EMS; facilitating walk-throughs with perspective event planners and post walk-through communicating relevant information to the Meetings & Events Office staff.
  • Meets with event host at start and end of event for review.
  • Acts as Center representative in managing all aspects of successful onsite event delivery, including setup, Audio-Visual services, security, catering, and any contracted services. The effective and successful management and delivery of these operations are critical to the success of the events hosted in the Centers, the reputation of the Department, and Rutgers University.
  • Since the Centers are part of the meeting and event revenue generation operation of the Department, the successful management of event services by the Assistant Manager is also critical to the financial health of the Department. The Assistant Manager has budgetary oversight of assigned student staff payroll and is responsible for recommending expenditures and revenue generating ideas.
  • Given the cross functional nature of the Department of Student Centers & Activities, it is necessary for this position to take an active leadership role in departmental and university initiatives. This position will be expected to participate on departmental and university committees.
  • In addition to cross-collaboration within Student Affairs, this position collaborates regularly with and is expected to maintain productive working relationships with other university departments including Facilities Maintenance, Custodial and Grounds Services, the Security and Technologies Shop, the Furniture and Fabric Shop, Public Safety, Risk Management, Procurement, Dining Services, REHS, RUTV, Conference Services, Alumni Relations, Admissions, Academic Schools, the President’s Office, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in student affairs administration, higher education, business administration or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experiences that demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of student union/activities/programming and/or general higher education principles and practices.
  • Two years of experience in working student unions/activities with experience in facility management, event management, and college center/student union operations, services, and philosophy.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Driver’s license and ability to drive.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and communication skills; and the ability to complete multiple and concurrent tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in diverse environments that encompasses students, staff, faculty from diverse backgrounds to ensure an inclusive community.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills, training experience s and fiscal/budget management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in student affairs administration, higher education, or related field.
  • Proficiency in various technology platforms and applications (Canvas, Microsoft Operating Systems) and preferred familiarity with Anthology (Campus Labs).
  • Association and/or involvement with professional associations (ACUI, NACA, NASPA, ACPA).
Equipment Utilized
  • Proven proficiency with Microsoft Systems (Outlook, MS Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Event Management Software (EMS/R25 and Social Tables).
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift a 25lbs.
