Department Description

The Yellow Cluster is an academic unit within the College of Letters and Science and serves the departments of Psychology, Philosophy, Center for Mind & Brain, Science and Technology Studies, and Center for Science & Innovation Studies. Yellow Cluster majors include Psychology, Philosophy, Science and Technology Studies, and Cognitive Science. Minors include Psychology, Philosophy, Logic, and History & Philosophy of Science. It is a very large academic unit containing over 3,300 total undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds in all four Yellow Cluster majors.

The Yellow Cluster Advising Center includes five professional staff advisors who report to the Undergraduate Programs Manager, and a team of approximately 10 peer advisors. This position provides comprehensive and wide-ranging academic advising and administrative services to a diverse population. Serves six independent units in the College of Letters and Science Social Sciences that are clustered for administrative purposes: Psychology Department, Philosophy Department, Center for Mind and Brain (CMB), Science and Technology Studies Department (STS), Center for Science and Innovation Studies (CSIS), and Cognitive Science.

The units consists of a Department Chair & 2 Vice Chairs (Psychology), Department Chair (Philosophy), Director and Associate Director (CMB), Department Chair (STS), Director of CSIS and Director of Cognitive Science, approximately 70 Senate faculty, 35 Academic Federation faculty, 100+ non-Senate academic employees of varying titles (Graduate Student Researchers, Teaching Assistants, Visiting Scholars, Postdoctoral Scholars, Lecturers), 150+ graduate students, 3200+ undergraduate majors, and 23 staff FTE. Since the Centers draw faculty from different colleges/divisions it requires that this position is conversant and knowledgeable about the many varying units.



Job Summary

Under general supervision, responsible for providing undergraduate program administration and academic advising in the College of Letters and Science’s Yellow Cluster Undergraduate Advising Unit for Psychology, Philosophy, Cognitive Science, and Science and Technology Studies.

Oversee mandatory advising. Interpret, develop, and implement policies. Work with cluster leadership on program development and administration. Analyze enrollment trends and assist with curricular planning. Manage quality assessment. Administer undergraduate activities. Provide administrative support.

Provide comprehensive, advanced academic advising on a wide range of complex issues to diverse population of undergraduate students in the departmental majors. Certify completion of major and minor degrees. Evaluate transfer student applications. Maintain student and instructional databases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience in problem identification, reasoning, analysis to identify trends; skills to find solutions to conflicting situations.

·       Experience in making decisions independently, manage details of complex projects and processes aligned with strategic priorities from start to finish with minimal direction, and to adapt to constantly shifting priorities and outcomes.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

·       Skills in judgment and decision-making, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.

·       Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing; skills to interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

·       Skills to retrieve, assemble, and analyze information for the preparation of reports, schedules, correspondence etc.

·       Skills to utilize technological tools for communication, student data management, and administrative tasks.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience in holistic advising and counseling approaches and experience with academic policies, procedures, and requirements in an education setting; recommending solutions to progression and requirement issues; skills to make proper referrals to other campus resources.

·       Experience in curriculum planning processes and best practices; knowledge of undergraduate courses and degree requirements.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Organizational and administrative skills to develop and implement new programs and/or material to better meet the undergraduate advising needs of the cluster.

·       Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and effective listening skills to interact positively and cooperatively with students, family members, faculty, administrators, staff, and the general public in a culturally dynamic University.

·       Skill to identify and determine appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.

·       Knowledge of university, college, major, or general education requirements and their application to specific major programs.
