Program Coordinator/Instructor of Nurse Aide

The Nurse Aide Instructor/ Coordinator fulfills a primary role as an Instructor and Coordinator of the Nurse Aide I program for the division in all three counties of the service area. He/she will serve as the functional supervisor for Nurse Aide programs within the college and will ensure that courses meet the needs of employees and employers, including the development of new ideas for emerging challenges, and will further ensure that training meets the requirements of external certification authorities. This is a multi-faceted position, working with students, faculty, staff, and the community to meet the changing demands of the services area.
 

This is a full-time, 12-month position housed at the Wilkes Campus (Herring Hall), with the possibility of occasional teaching assignments at the Ashe Campus or Alleghany Center. This position may require weekend and evening hours.

The Nurse Aide Coordinator/Instructor position includes the following responsibilities and expectations:
  • Develop and teach courses in the WDCE Health Occupations programs; including but not limited to: Nurse Aide I, Nurse Aide II, Nurse Aide I & II Refresher Courses
  • Model student expectations including effective communication, dependability, critical thinking, positive customer service, and leadership.
  • Maintain equipment/supplies, schedules, and curriculum development.
  • Enforce safety, infection prevention, and NC DHSR policies (Division of Health Service Regulation).
  • Prepare and maintain documentation, including student records.
  • Assist with marketing the Nurse Aide programs.
  • Support the college’s commitment to enhance student learning by increasing student disposition to use critical thinking skills via professional development activities.
  • Serve on college committees as assigned.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Serve as a state-approved Nurse Aide I Training Program Coordinator; maintaining the NA I program at all three counties in a manner consistent with Federal regulations, State guidelines, and standards of educational practice.
  • Serve as the contact person for the Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR)
  • Orient new faculty to DHSR approved policies, procedures, and state curriculum upon hire and in-service on the same topics annually.
  • Instruct courses within the health services area, as needed, and maintain appropriate external certifications to serve as an instructor.
  • Serve as the functional leader of the college’s health services training programs for all three counties, including supervision of full- and part-time faculty and staff assigned to the program.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an ongoing plan for health services training that incorporates set goals and fosters cooperation among staff and the community.
  • Recruit qualified instructors, secure instructional materials and equipment, and coordinate logistics for health services and other assigned courses.
  • Maintain ongoing, positive relationships with the healthcare community, external accrediting agencies, and NCCCS experts in the assigned area.
  • Coordinate the marketing and recruitment for health services training.
  • Collaborate with external entities to ensure that health services courses and training occur in a manner to best serves students and the community, at large.
  • Review clinical sites before submission for DHSR approval and maintain current contracts with the respected sites.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in assigned areas through open dialogue with division staff and external partners, and then implementing changes as needed.
  • Coordinate state testing for the Nurse Aide programs in all three counties and maintain testing integrity procedures.
  • Analyze the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) test score results.
  • Understand current and emerging trends and develop innovative training solutions to meet the demands of the healthcare community.
  • Advise current and potential students regarding health services courses.
  • Serve on external boards and committees that support the goals of the division, with the approval of the supervisor.
  • Follow the processes and procedures of the division to ensure the timely flow of relevant paperwork such as registrations and contracts.
  • Manage budgets for assigned areas and meet reporting requirements.

  • Serve on college committees and taskforces, as assigned.
  • Understand the mission of Wilkes Community College and the NC Community College System
  • Maintain regular contact with the Region’s Education Consultant and meet with the consultant as required.
  • Attend and participate in Regional Nurse Aide meetings scheduled by DHSR.
  • Current knowledge of NC DHSR regulations
  • Maintain an active RN license.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Required Qualifications
  • Registered nurse with an unencumbered license.
  • Licensed to practice in North Carolina.
  • At least two (2) years (4000 hours) of experience as a registered nurse in the United States.
  • At least one (1) year (2000 hours) of registered nurse experience in the provision of long-term care facility services in the United States demonstrated by:
  • Work in a long-term care facility licensed as a skilled nursing facility or a skilled nursing facility that is a distinct part of a hospital; or
  • Supervise or teach students in a long-term care facility licensed as a skilled nursing facility or a skilled nursing facility that is a distinct part of a hospital.
  • Must have a commitment to professional development and an understanding of and commitment to the purpose of a comprehensive community college.
  • Current AHA BLS CPR certification.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred.

 

 

Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed under general supervision in an office or classroom setting with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required.

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details and content of the discipline, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills are important.

Salary
Estimated Hiring Range: $52,000 to $62,000 based on education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
